Enbridge invests in pipeline tech supporting hydrogen transportation

May 3 (Renewables Now) - Canada-based energy infrastructure company Enbridge Inc (TSE:ENB) has invested USD 6.6 million (EUR 6.1m) in Smartpipe Technologies, which has created innovative pipeline technology that improves safety and enables the transportation of hydrogen. Houston, Texas-based Smartpipe has developed a patented technology where a composite internal pipeline liner is pulled through an existing pipeline to enhance its structural integrity and allow for improved monitoring. Apart from boosting safety and reliability through its non-metallic construction, the technology also supports hydrogen and carbon dioxide (CO2) energy infrastructure needed in the energy transition. The solution relies on a trenchless installation method, which makes it suitable for upgrading existing ageing steel pipelines in hard to access locations. "This is a very exciting technology that can improve the safety of existing pipelines and support the transportation of low carbon energy sources such as hydrogen, demonstrating how our assets can be a bridge to a cleaner energy future," said Caitlin Tessin, Enbridge's Vice President of Strategy and Market Innovation.
