The double life of Keith Simms, the Bondi Beast

Nov 21, 2022

Among the many questions that remain unanswered for Simms’ victims, his family, and the public, is how he managed to deceive those who knew him and evade police for so long. At his funeral, a relative said he had a number of jobs over the years, including with the National Parks and Wildlife Service, Botany Council, Bonnie Doon Golf Course and the University of NSW. Comment has been sought from the above employers, with UNSW confirming he was contracted as a gardener in 2017 – six years after his last known rape. Advertisement Loading For many years, police believed they were looking for several culprits. Simms’ physique fluctuated as he aged, his victims weren’t a single type, and he had different modes of attack. Police said Simms would either break into women’s homes in the middle of the night and attack them in their beds, or he would be opportunistic, grabbing them as they were out jogging or walking and dragging them into bushes or a secluded area. His oldest victim was 55, the youngest just 14. Victims said he was always either armed with a knife or threatened to use a knife, and spoke with an Australian accent. He kept his face covered and was usually dressed in casual clothing including tracksuits, hooded jumpers, footy shorts and singlets. While police said every individual incident was thoroughly investigated, it was only in 2005 that five sexual assaults which took place in 2000 were linked, and police established Strike Force Doreen to investigate them. Another seven cases were linked in a DNA breakthrough, before further inquiries expanded the investigation to 31 incidents between 1987 and 2001. Police would not say whether there could be more unaccounted for victims. Advances in forensic DNA technology enabled investigators to eventually track down Simms via male relatives – and in September, his DNA was found to be an exact match to semen samples provided by 12 of his victims. For the many women he is known to have terrorised, the news has provided some closure despite Simms’ death providing no opportunity for justice. Detective Johns said many women she called felt relief knowing that he had been identified and “that he could never do anything like this to them or anybody again”.
