Daniel Johns pens lengthy letter revealing why he has held off releasing new music

Jul 15, 2021

Former Silverchair frontman Daniel Johns has revealed why he hasn’t released any new music. The popular 90s rocker whose band delivered chart-topping hits Tomorrow, Freak and Straight Lines has shied away from the public eye in more recent years. However, in a new Instagram post, only his second in more than a year, John, 42, mused that the world is in a “very strange order at the moment”. “The reason I’ve not released music is not because of that,” he said. “Sometimes I need to feel like a human being and feel what other human beings feel without believing that I am important or creative. I am not. I need to create. There is no need for people to see, hear or appreciate it. Johns’ highly successful band called it quits 2011, before the Sydney guitarist debuted as a solo artist in 2015 with a four-track EP. In 2018 he collaborated with Empire of the Sun’s Luke Steele for the single Dreams. Camera Icon Silverchair. I believe it’s a way to feel connected to whatever this is and not a way to make people feel something for you.” Johns, 42, has previously opened up about his mental health struggles and a life-threatening battle with anorexia, but assured his fans the letter was not a “cry for help”. He concluded he is “not sure” what he is doing, but said he was sure how we wants to “do it”. “In a time where people need guidance I cannot help as I’m seeking it myself,” he said. “This is not a cry for help / this is a way to say to anyone who’s listening or reading it’s OK to be confused, disillusioned, saddened. It’s also OK to be inspired, optimistic and brave.
