EMR and HIT People in the News this week

EMR and HIT People in the News this week June 8, 2012 by News The following is a weekly summary of EMR and HIT People in the News. This weeks summary includes news from Medsphere, Shareable Ink and the Illinois Rural HealthNet. Medsphere Appoints Lily S. Chang as Chief Technology Officer Medsphere Systems Corporation has announced the addition of Lily S. Chang to the company’s leadership team as Chief Technology Officer. Prior to joining Medsphere, Lily served as Chief Technology Officer for Advent Software, Inc., where, over the past 19 years, she helped grow the company from less than 100 employees to over 1000 today.“Staying close to the customer and focusing on their needs is the key to building a great product. Medsphere’s focus is on improving the customer experience by adding new technologies only when they make sense for the customer” Lily’s extensive and varied experiences, as well as her personal philosophy of technology application, make her a great fit for the unique healthcare IT marketplace in general and for the development of Medsphere’s open source OpenVista EHR in particular. “Just applying technology to a given job or industry does not necessarily make things better. This is especially true of healthcare, where so many non-technical realities impact how the technology must be designed and implemented,” said Medsphere President and CEO Irv Lichtenwald. “What Lily demonstrated most keenly at Advent was a deep understanding of the realities of technology adoption. Medsphere is extremely pleased that she has decided to focus her energies on advancing open source technology in healthcare.” Indeed, while process automation and workflow efficiency are among Lily’s primary objectives with Medsphere, she knows that neither can happen without also focusing on people. “Staying close to the customer and focusing on their needs is the key to building a great product. Medsphere’s focus is on improving the customer experience by adding new technologies only when they make sense for the customer,” Lily said. “We want to be on the bleeding edge, so our customers can be on the leading edge. But we also want to use technology smartly and appropriately—not chase it for its own sake—to bring value to our customers.” Lily has a degree in chemistry from Taiwan’s Chung Yuan Christian University and has spent her entire career working to advance uses of technology. Shareable Ink Appoints Keith R. Slater as VP of Client Services Shareable Ink® has announced that  Keith R. Slater  has joined the organization as Vice President of Client Services. With 25 years of experience in healthcare IT, servicing physician and hospital automation demands, Slater will be responsible for leading Shareable Ink’s customer implementation, account management, and support functions. Prior to joining Shareable Ink, Slater served as a General Manager and Vice President at Henry Schein Medical Systems, the technology division of Henry Schein (NASDAQ: HSIC), a Fortune 500 company. His interdisciplinary team of client services, sales, finance, and IT produced the MicroMD Practice Management and Electronic Health Records software. Slater led the division through the necessary development, certification and implementation planning for clients to have a path toward Meaningful Use and EDI 5010 regulatory mandates. In addition to Henry Schein, Slater has held leadership positions at MED3000 and Misys Healthcare Systems (now Allscripts). “Keith Slater is a healthcare IT industry veteran and a wonderful addition to our senior leadership team,” said Stephen S. Hau, President and CEO, Shareable Ink. “Keith is a results-oriented manager with extensive experience in scaling teams to support rapid growth and ensure customer success.” “I am excited to be part of a high-growth organization like Shareable Ink that is making a meaningful impact in clinical documentation and analytics,” said Slater. “I look forward to growing a world-class client services organization to support our healthcare customers and ensure their success.” Holloway named CEO and President of Illinois Rural HealthNet Roger L. Holloway has been named CEO and President of the Illinois Rural HealthNet following a reorganization designed to broaden the scope and reach of the network, according to John L. Lewis, chairman of the IRHN board. IRHN is a high-speed, fiber-optic network that links rural Illinois hospitals and clinics with tertiary hospitals, and also throughout the nation. IRHN’s network allows health care providers to connect to the fiber backbone and exchange vital information over a dedicated network: www.illinoisruralhealthnet.org . Lewis said Holloway brings more than 30 years of health care experience to the IRHN, where he will focus on establishing partnerships with hospitals and clinics to provide them with the bandwidth they will need to meet future health care demands. “Roger has a firm understanding of how important technology and high-speed bandwidth are to our state’s health care providers. Telemedicine and videoconferencing are the future of medicine, particularly as rural areas seek to link up with major medical centers across the nation,” said Lewis. Holloway is employed by Northern Illinois University as Executive Director of Rural Health Resource Services. He also is Co-Director of the Illinois Health Information Technology Regional Extension Center (IL-HITREC), responsible for EHR adoption in the majority of the state. Holloway has been actively involved with the IRHN since its beginnings about five years ago. He recently resigned his position on the IRHN Executive Board, where he served as secretary. “I’m looking forward to the opportunity to enhance IRHN’s ability to improve health care for Illinois patients and to upgrade the state’s information technology system. We will build on the expertise and relationships established as a result of NIU’s leadership in health information technology,” Holloway said. Holloway has served both nationally and internationally as a health care consultant. He is past-president of the IRHA, and currently serves on the State of Illinois Health Information Exchange advisory Committee. He has served on this group since its inception and is a member of the HFS incentive committee. He also is a member of the Illinois Department of Public Health Planning Group on the State Health Improvement Plan.
