Geektime Conference: Angel Sensor

In this series we’ll be providing you with an in-depth look at said startups, if for no other reason than the fact that we can’t have you, our avid Geektime readers, not being able to keep up with the conversation at the next big soiree you attend where everyone will obviously be talking about these companies. So without further ado, here they are in all their glory: Angel Sensor Wearable tech and healthcare, to topics getting plenty of attention in their respective media sectors. However, amongst the dragged out anticipation over an apple iWatch and all the hoopla surrounding a possible government shutdown over Obama Care, one company is looking to use tech as means of managing your daily health habits and their asking indie developers to get involved in the process. A few ounces of prevention The Angel Sensor is a wristband that syncs with your smartphone and acts like a 24 hour news cycle of your homeostasis, recording and reporting on a wealth of metrics such as pulse, temperature and blood oxygen levels – all for your health or neurotic pleasure. It can track your daily cardio routines like running, stair climbing and swimming and will even monitor your sleep patterns affording you a little more insight in what you can do to be  more awake for when you get home from the office and you would ideally like to spend some quality time with your spouse and family – heavy emphasis on the word ‘quality’. But it’s not just in its capabilities the the Angel Sensor stands out. The truth is there are several  other similar products with similar biorhythm monitoring capabilities like Nike+ Fuelband, Fitbit Flex and Jawbone Up. However, where Angel is truly innovating is in its wholly unique software model that calls for the opening up of their API and the release of an Angel Sensor SDK to independent developers and researchers, calling upon them to come up with their own apps and solutions for Angel Sensor’s massive raw data gathering capabilities. In this far more critical sense, the Angel Sensor could not only improve health and quality of life but potentially save lives, literally. Depending on the kind of algorithmic assessments developers come up with, early detection of conditions and ailments is a very real possibility, especially if you or your family have a history of early detectable disorders like heart disease or high blood pressure. “Unlike other biorythmic tracking bands on the market, we not only provide access to data in their processed form, but also the data in its raw form, such as ECG numbers, for example. With the competition’s products, developers can not use them beyond what was intended by the company in the first place. We encourage developers to work with us so that we can design the the band itself and ecosystem to be set up around the band to interface with developers and users.” explained co-founder Eugene Jorov whose father’s passing from a heart attack helped to catalyze Jorov’s vision. Jorov founded the company along with his partner Amir Shlomovitz in April of 2012. They raised an initial $70K from friends and family and are looking to raise an additional $100K from an Indiegogo crowd sourcing campaign. With a little over a month left to the campaign, Jorov and Shlomovitz have broken the halfway point with over $51K pledged, as of this writing. Photo Credit: PR – The Angel Team Smartphones, Tablets and Wristbands The idea to open up the API and release and SDK for a health tracking consumer device is a brilliant move. Knowingly or unknowingly, with this simple decision the team at Angel have granted their device the potential to be far more than just a single off the shelf product. What they may wind up creating in the end is a new marketplace for bio-feedback based companies and products to compete for app dominance on their wristband the way information based app companies are currently geeking it out on smartphones and tablets. This could be huge.
