Sensing Strategies is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: Real Time Monitoring of Natural and Enhanced Space Environments. The abstract given for this project is as follows: The proposed effort will develop a novel radiation classifier for detecting optical and non- optical sources causing interference or potential damage to the STSS spacecraft. Two distinct sensor compnents will be used in the design. A pulse-optimized sensor with multiple coincidence channels will detect optical transient events and provide data on space weather (i.e., particle events and energy distribution). An imaging diffractometer will be used to characterize DC and low frequency phenomena with high sensivity. Both sensors will be able to localize the direction of sources detected and provide feedback to the spacecraft with a real-time processing algorithms based in space qualified field programmable gate arrays. SSI is experienced in developing space qualified hardware and will leverage designs in handheld and airborne sensors that are suitable for transition to the space environment. SSI also believes the proposed sensors could be used for other MDA missions such as detecting and characterizing flashes from missile intercepts which is a key requirement for kill assessment. Sensing Strategies is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: Shipboard Laser Detection. The abstract given for this project is as follows: Sensing Strategies, Inc. (SSI) has extensive expertise in laser detection, which allows us to propose an ambitious effort with a combined analytical and experimental approach. Our proposal includes irradiance and sensor performance predictions to estimate the threat detection envelopes for a sample sensor concept. With these predictions as a basis going into the effort, the Phase I resources can be focused on technology tradeoff and system miniaturization and design issues. Objectives of this Phase I proposed effort are: (1) Develop a shipboard laser warning sensor preliminary design that achieves comparable or improved performance over SBLAS in the 1.06 micron region while reducing the size of the off-axis and direct illumination systems, and (2) Propose an off-axis collection system for laser threat detection in the 1.5 micron range and predict its expected performance in tactical scenarios. The objective of the optional field test component is to collect quantitative aerosol scatter irradiance data to verify the model predictions and characterize sensitivity of SBLAS and a breadboard SSI receiver. The primary product from the Phase I effort will be a development plan for a Phase II prototype sensor system based on the miniaturized designs developed under Phase I.
