8.9.2023 Second Spectrum, and parent company Genius Sports, has developed a strong relationship with FIFA and Host Broadcast Services, producer of World Cup host broadcasts since 2002. Hunt said that the governing body indicated it wanted to see something new in a broadcast for the Women’s World Cup. With that as the catalyst, Second Spectrum began workshopping what that product could be. “If we can take the tracking data, we can create graphics onscreen that can differentiate it from a regular broadcast. Is this interesting?” Hunt remembered from those conversations. “And straight away, FIFA were excited by it.” Once that vision became established, Hunt felt the product was an easy pitch. That discussion was able to shift quickly to the integration of Second Spectrum’s technology, which takes source feeds (broadcast video and Second Spectrum’s live tracking data), pushes it through their augmentation pipeline and then sends the completed product back to the broadcaster. Second Spectrum’s work with leagues -- such as the NBA, Premier League and MLS -- and other broadcasters like ESPN and CBS Sports has allowed the company to innovate. Genius Sports and CBS Sports won the George Wensel Technical Achievement Award at the Sports Emmys for RomoVision, an in-broadcast graphic that diagramed plays during the network’s NFL production. The goal with this WC stream, Hunt said, was to not overwhelm viewers. He also sees a promising future for what viewing could become, echoing Christie’s thought, with this as its backbone. Different experiences for users, as of right now, require different streams, Hunt mentioned. The future he expects is one with one stream, where the viewer has control over what production view they’re watching. “It is something new and something fresh,” Hunt said. “And I think something that we all see as a kind of a starting point, if you like, and a baseline for what can be achieved going forward.”
