April 26, 2023 AlphaTauri has announced that Franz Tost will step down as team principal at the end of the 2023 season, with Laurent Mekies, until yesterday Ferrari’s race director, returning to the Italian team in his place, and will join the team in date unknown. In addition, former FIA executive director Peter Bayer will join AlphaTauri later this season as its CEO, tasked with overseeing the team’s strategic direction at both its Italian and UK facilities. Tost has been in charge of the team since 2006, having been appointed by Red Bull GmbH when it completed its takeover of Minardi in late 2005. Tost will maintain links with the team beyond the season on an advisory basis. Tost stated: First of all, I would like to thank Dietrich Mateschitz, who gave me the incredible opportunity to lead the team of Scuderia Toro Rosso and Scuderia AlphaTauri for the last 18 years. It has been a real privilege to lead the team for such a long period and a great pleasure to work with so many motivated and capable people, who share my passion for Formula 1. At the age of 67 it is time to hand over my position, with Peter becoming the new CEO and Laurent the head of the team. We have found two very professional people, who will bring the team to the next level. Mekies, who previously worked at the Faenza team when it was called Minardi and Toro Rosso, said: Firstly, I would like to pay tribute to Franz for the great job he has done for almost two decades as head of Faenza. I wish him all the best for the future and know that both Peter and I will rely on his input and advice in times to come. I can’t wait, it’s an honor to take on the role of team manager and to return to the team where I spent a large part of my early career. AlphaTauri has all the necessary ingredients for greater success in the future and together with Peter I look forward to making it happen. For its part, Bayer, who will leave the FIA ​​in mid-2022, said: I would also like to thank Franz for his dedication to Scuderia AlphaTauri and its predecessor, Scuderia Toro Rosso. It is also a great privilege for me to take on the role of CEO in the team and to work alongside Laurent. AlphaTauri has a fantastic team of people and excellent infrastructure in Faenza and the UK.
