Richard Goldsack named Dealmaker of the Year

19 Nov 2021 Mark Durden-Smith Richard Goldsack of Clearwater International took home the prestigious Dealmaker of the Year title at the 2021 Insider Yorkshire Dealmakers Awards. Last night’s event was held at New Dock Hall and compered by Mark Durden-Smith. It celebrated the major transactions in Yorkshire and the professionals who are enabling mergers and acquisitions in the region. The awards were sponsored by Aon, Arbuthnot Commercial Asset Based Lending , Axon Moore, Blacks Solicitors, IGF, LCF Law, Michael Page, Shawbrook Bank and ThinCats . HSBC UK sponsored the drinks reception. Emerging Dealmaker of the Year Sponsored by Shawbrook Bank Winner: Paul Denvers, Enact Fund The period was Enact’s most active year since it was established, with four investments and one exit. Denvers has led on three transactions including the financial due diligence on the acquisition of Evolutions Television. The judging panel said that Denvers’ submission was very strong, adding that he has come a long way in a very short space of time with Enact. Shortlisted: National/International Deal of the Year Sponsored by Aon Winner: Sale of Wolseley UK by Ferguson plc ( Rothschild & Co ) Ferguson was advised by Rothschild & Co on the disposal to private equity house Clayton, Dubilier & Rice. The judges described Wolseley as a stand-out Ripon business that’s going to make major US funds through the deal. Shortlisted: Acquisition of Routes Healthcare by Palatine PE (Grant Thornton, Clearwater International, Palatine Private Equity, Key Capital Partners, Ward Hadaway, Shawbrook Bank, KPMG, Park Place Corporate Finance, Gateley, Eversheds Sutherland , Fluid IT). Acquisition of InXpress by Hudson Hill Capital ( Squire Patton Boggs , KPMG, Park Place Corporate Finance, Winston & Strawn, Barings, Goldman Sachs) Acquisition of Wincanton’s Container Logistics business by Maritime Transport (Park Place Corporate Finance, DWF) Transaction Services Team of the Year Winner: Deloitte The Deloitte team worked on more than 60 transactions in the 12 months to August 2021, with a combined value in excess of £11bn. The judges were impressed with the size of the transactions which dealt with some massive household names locally including Walmart’s £6.8m disposal of Asda – the largest deal in the region in 2020. Shortlisted: Clarion plays an active role in supporting the community in which it works. The company has supported charities through various fundraising events including the Run For All Leeds 10K Clarion Corporate Challenge. It also has links with the Ahead Partnership which connects employers and education to combat social and economic inequality. Bank of the Year Winner: Virgin Money/Yorkshire Bank Virgin Money’s structured finance team completed ten deals in the qualifying period with a number of different mid-market private equity sponsors. The judges commented on the prominent role that Virgin Money has played in the deals it has supported this year. Yorkshire Bank merged with Virgin Money in 2018 and the group has since been working on bringing all brands together under Virgin Money. Shortlisted: Sponsored by IGF The acquisition will support a substantial recapitalisation of Forgemaster’s defence-critical plant and equipment over the next ten years. The judges described it as a high-profile and unique local deal that is of strategic importance to the defence industry in the UK. They added that the complex nature of the transaction highlights the expertise of the region’s advisers. Shortlisted: Acquisition of Town & Country Petfoods by Assisi Pet Care ( Clarion Solicitors , Park Place Corporate Finance, Murray Harcourt, Tax Advisory Partnership, BDB Pitmans, Raworths, Clearwater International, Browne Jacobson, Duncan & Toplis) Sale of Redhall Networks by Enact to WHP (Clearwater International, Addleshaw Goddard , PwC, Mazars, Womble Bond Dickinson) Management buyout of JM Glendinning (Grant Thornton, Osborne Clarke, Addleshaw Goddard , Intuitus, KPMG) Funder of the Year Winner: LDC LDC has completed seven transactions over the qualifying period, and supported its portfolio companies to make more than 20 acquisitions. The judges praised the company for its particularly strong exit performance, having exited Pelsis Group to Pamplona Capital Management as well as Sigmat to Etex. Shortlisted: Winner: Ian Gilbert, former managing partner at Walker Morris Ian Gilbert retired from Walker Morris in 2018, bringing an end to his eight-year tenure as managing partner and a 33-year career in corporate law. Ian focused on establishing a strong collaborative culture within the firm, built around client focus and talent engagement. Corporate Finance Advisory Team of the Year Sponsored by Axon Moore Rothschild & Co has advised on ten deals during the qualifying period, including the public takeover bids of WM Morrison and CBRE’s acquisition of Turner & Townsend. The judges said that Rothschild has had a phenomenal year marked by a list of outstanding big ticket deals, in what has been a bullish M&A market. Shortlisted: Winner: Acquisition of Infinity Works by Accenture ( Addleshaw Goddard , Clearwater International, PwC) Infinity Works has experience across multiple sectors from retail to financial services, as well as on some of the largest digital-led projects in national government. The judges described the deal as an impressive story of local advisers bringing a partner on board to help them grow and build equity for further value creation. Shortlisted: Acquisition of majority stake in Turner & Townsend by CBRE ( Rothschild & Co , Pinsent Masons, KPMG, Morgan Stanley & Co, Simpson Thacher & Bartlett LLP, Dentons) Merger of Lomond Capital and Linley & Simpson (LDC, Clearwater International, Freeths , Womble Bond Dickinson, Dickson Minto, Deloitte, Dow Schofield Watts , TLP Capital) Investment in IDHL by Bridgepoint Development Capital ( Squire Patton Boggs , Clarity, Deloitte, PwC, Ropes & Gray, Muzinich & Co, Ropes & Gray, Intechnica) Sale of Pelsis by LDC to Pamplona (LDC, Rothschild & Co , DLA Piper, PwC, OC&C, Houlihan Lokey, William Blair, Kirkland & Ellis, Squire Patton Boggs) Dealmaker of the Year Winner: Richard Goldsack, Clearwater International The judging panel praised the incredible start Richard has had since joining Clearwater in 2019. Over the qualifying period he worked on eight transactions with a combined deal value of more than £470m. Examples include Palatine’s investment in Routes Healthcare and the acquisition of Infinity Works by Accenture. Shortlisted:
