M
MaxPower

Maxpower is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: Safe, High-Power Battery for Sonobuoys. The abstract given for this project is as follows: The Navy has established a need to update the present high power sonobuoy power source used in Air Anti Submarine Warfare (ASW) Systems. Present technology for the ASW sonobuoy battery utilizes a primary Lithium/SO2 battery chemistry which is capable of providing 20, 10 second pulses drawing 5500 W of power at 65 V. The existing system offers a low cost, high power solution, however concerns have been raised over the safety of this chemistry. Under high rates of discharge, the SO2 cell generates excessive amounts of heat which cause the cells to vent, releasing toxic fumes to the surroundings. MaxPower offers a baseline Li/MnO2 cell system as replacement for the Li/ SO2. Unique in this baseline cell are the cathode formulation and superior solution properties that can sustain high discharge condition. We showed equivalent pulse data showing that the Li/MnO2 cell system can meet the established power requirements, and we will validate this capability at the full size cell hardware level. Maxpower is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: High Performance Electrochemical Capacitor Using Nanomaterials for Electrodes.. The abstract given for this project is as follows: MaxPower's overall goal of the Phase I program is to use electrospinning technology to produce carbon nanofibers for ultracapacitor applications. These fibers will be subjected to subsequesnt processing to enhance their electrochemical performance and then coated onto foil to form composite electrodes. The composite electrodes will be used to fabricate prototype ultra-capacitors that are capable of delivering 10 Wh/kg energy density and 34 kw/kg power density while meeting the specified military temperature range. Maxpower is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: Long Endurance, High Power Battery. The abstract given for this project is as follows: Maxpower Inc. is proposing the replacement of the present UAV-Sonobouy battery chemistry with a novel high power Lithium Monofluoride[Li/(CF)n] system. Though historically used in low power applications, Maxpower has proven that Li/(CF)n systems can meet high power requirements by combining proprietary thin cathode technology with a highly porous electrospun separator. Projections based upon lab scale tests show that a 20% reduction in volume and a 33% increase in flight time can be achieved with this new system. If implemented, the Li/(CF)n chemistry will eliminate the consumption of silver in the current Magnesium/Silver-Chloride system, offering a significant reduction raw material costs. Maxpower is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: High-Capacity Primary Battery for Extreme Environments. The abstract given for this project is as follows: MaxPower's goal during the Phase I program is to design and demonstrate the capability of a primary Li|CFx battery assembly that is capable of delivering in excess of 12 hours operation at -40'aC in a battery architecture that weighs less than 0.7 pounds and fits a 14 in3 envelope. Successful battery performance will hinge upon MaxPower's expertise in manufacturing of thin electrodes and implementation into hermetically sealed hardware. The battery architecture includes implementation of SOC technology using commercially available Integrated Circuits with minimal power consumption and low cost impacts. The combined battery chemistry with SOC implementation will limit costs and overall product development time. The developed SOC circuitry will be able to project remaining capacity based on temperature and previous discharge rates. Additionally, the battery assembly will contain an imbedded LED display in the casing that will indicate to the user remaining battery capacity when initiated by push button. After demonstration of the feasibility of the selected chemistry and SOC implementation, MaxPower will use modeling techniques to project performances for Phase II prototype development and build.

W
Windsave

Windsave Ltd., established in 2002, is a dynamic Scottish company within the Renewable Energy sector. The company are focused on developing micro generation solutions for domestic and commercial properties. The Windsave System is a small wind turbine generator system, which uses low wind speeds to create electricity. nnThe Windsave System uses the company's technology, which generates electricity supplementary to the national grid supply, reducing reliance on traditional energy sources; benefiting the environment, and helping to lower domestic electricity bills and CO2 emissions. nnMany people have the desire to protect the environment; the company's challenge from the beginning has been to turn that desire into action. The company's aim is to enable householders, commercial enterprises and local authorities to move from being mere consumers of energy to becoming important contributors to overall energy requirements. nnThe company's technology has been fully and independently tested by the National Engineering Laboratory and is fully accredited by the DTI under the Low Carbon Building Programme (formerly known as The Clear Skies Programme). It is BS and CE approved.

C
Choren Industrietechnik

Choren Industrietechnik is an engineering service-provider and licensor, offering the planning, layout and installation of systems for synthesis gas generation according to the CCG process.

V
Vortex Hydro Energy

Vortex Hydro Energy is a company focused on the renewable energy sector, specifically hydrokinetic power generation. The company's main product is the VIVACE converter, a device that harnesses the energy of slow-moving river and ocean currents to generate electricity. This technology does not rely on propellers like traditional water turbines, but instead uses the physical phenomenon of vortex induced vibration, where water current flows around cylinders, inducing motion that is then converted into electricity. It is based in Ypsilati, Michigan.

E
ExRo

ExRo has developed a fundamentally different generator design that is expected to have more linear operating characteristics, thereby increasing the aggregate energy output from renewables. Conventional electrical generators must be designed to the maximum expected input energy and output load, leading to inefficiencies when energy input or loads are lower or higher. Most renewable energy sources (wind, tidal, small hydro) tend to be highly variable. The key patents of the company were recently approved.

E
E21

E21 LLC aims to provide Mid-Atlantic businesses with on-site power generation services, allowing companies to take advantage of renewable energy's predictable cost. E21 aims to provide a turn-key solution, with the customer able to acquire an on-site system with no capital costs.
