Modifying mice: SF startup unleashes new feat in genetic engineering

Jul 30, 2017

Early Stage: Turning crooked carrots and weird watermelons into gold Researchers frequently test new medicines on mice before they test them on humans, so Ravata engineers mice with the characteristics scientists need to study. Researchers testing a new drug for Alzheimer’s, for example, would need mice engineered to have a humanized form of Alzheimer’s. The device Ravata Solutions uses to genetically engineer embryos. (Courtesy of Ravata Solutions) (Courtesy of Ravata Solutions) For decades, lab technicians have performed this task by hand — removing embryos from a mouse, placing them under a microscope and injecting them with a genetic modifier (today, CRISPR is used). That process was effective between 8 and 10 percent of the time, and it could take months, said Ravata co-founder and CEO Arshia Firouzi. Instead, his team created a device that uses pulses of electricity to open the cells and let CRISPR in — a technique known as electroporation. Ravata’s method is more than 10 times as efficient as the old micro-injections, Firouzi said, which means new drugs can come to market sooner. Where they stand: Ravata, which graduated from the San Francisco-based IndieBio startup accelerator in February, already is working with the UC Davis Mouse Biology Program, and has plans to partner with UCSF and French genetics company genOway in early 2018. The next step? Ravata plans to expand from mice to flies. Only in Silicon Valley: Feeling disappointed by your dating prospects? Here’s a solution: try dating only people with a little blue check mark next to their Twitter handle. That means they’re verified by Twitter, and, according to a new dating app, worthy of your love. Blue,  the dating platform exclusively for verified Twitter users, is rolling out in San Francisco, Los Angeles, New York, London and Tokyo. The app is a premium version of an older platform called Loveflutter, which uses social media activity (including tweets) to match prospective soul mates. The tagline on the Blue website is “date celebrities discreetly,” as the blue check marks are intended to alert the public that a Twitter account of public interest is authentic. But having a verified Twitter account hardly makes you a celebrity (I know because I have one — and if they gave me a blue check mark, their standards can’t be all that high). Last year Twitter said it had 187,000 verified users, which, TechCrunch reported, was about .06 percent of its 310 million monthly active users. Check out support.twitter.com to request to verify your account, and visit loveflutter.com/blue to download the Blue app. Run the numbers: Can Uber make you happy? What about Postmates? Whether or not you admit to finding value in being able to use an app to order everything from pizza, to laundry, to a dog walker while sitting on your couch, research shows these services are making us happier. A recent study published by the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences found that working adults reported feeling more happiness after spending money on a time-saving purchase than they did after buying a material item. The study, which looked at adults in the U.S., Canada, Denmark and The Netherlands, found that 28 percent of respondents “buy time” in this way — spending an average of $148 a month. The Atlantic reported on the study Tuesday. Tags:
