About Moves

Moves is developed and run by ProtoGeo. The company was founded in Jan 2012 in Helsinki, Finland, to develop a pioneering all-day activity diary for smartphones. Moves records any walking, cycling, and running with calories burned for each activity. The activities build a daily storyline with routes and places that can be viewed on a map. There is no need to start and stop the app, or to login or register. The app is always on so that all the user needs to do is to keep a phone in a pocket or bag.

Facebook Inc (FB) backtracks on Moves data privacy

May 6, 2014

Facebook Inc (NASDAQ:FB) acquired a fitness app company called Moves a few weeks ago . The Moves app was created by a small Finland-based activity tracking startup called ProtoGeo. This acquisition gives Facebook the opportunity to compete against other fitness technology apps like FitBit and Runkeeper. After the acquisition, Moves said that its users would not have to worry about Facebook accessing their personal data. That promise ended up being short-lived. Classy. @movesapp , ten days ago: “there are no plans to commingle data with Facebook.” https://t.co/iVly8xq7KZ Today: pic.twitter.com/xEkMizLLwo — Ole Begemann (@olebegemann) May 5, 2014 . @imdiane We have no plans to commingle data with Facebook. Moves will remain independent. — Moves (@movesapp) April 24, 2014 Moves has quietly revised its privacy policy so that it can share data with Facebook — it has only been 11 days since the acquisition. This should not come as a surprise though. Facebook is known for collecting data to serve ads throughout its apps, including acquired mobile companies like Instagram. The unfortunate news is that Moves made a false promise to users rather than telling the truth upfront. According to BuzzFeed , Moves’ old privacy policy points out that the company will alert users to changes in the policy through e-mail or the company Twitter account, but this has not happened yet.
