1998 Subaru Impreza WRC (Type 22B) prototype to be auctioned – Auto-Motor

Aug 14, 2023

No Comments The 40th anniversary of the birth of the Subaru car brand and its success in rallying were celebrated with the limited series 1998 Subaru Impreza WRC (Type 22B), the first prototype of which, which was also seen at the 1997 Tokyo Motor Show, is now being auctioned. The otherwise available Impreza construction was modified at many points, from the suspension to the braking system to the BBS rims, the exterior with widened wheel arches and large spoilers thanks to designer Peter Stevens, who (also) worked for Prodrive at the time. A total of 5 prototypes were made, of which this is the only one that was assembled back in 1997. After completing their task, the cars were presented to the WRC drivers of the time (Nicky Grist and Colin McRea also received 1 each), the first one was given to David Lapworth, who works at Prodrive, who is responsible for the rally car of the WRC champion. So far, it has had 3 owners, after Subaru, Prodrive, then a collector who owned it for 20 years and is now – at Monterey Car Week 2023 – putting it up for auction. The Subaru Impreza WRC (Type 22B), which has run only 70 km in 25 years, still wears the original Pirelli tires and has received all maintenance/fluid changes, and is in usable condition. Bonhams experts estimate the price of this unique Subaru at HUF 157-192 million, the auction will take place on August 18. Ad
