SES, Planet Labs Partner to Develop Connectivity Platform for NASA Space Comm Program; Pete Hoene Quoted by May 11, 2022, 11:57 am SES’ government arm has partnered with Planet Labs to develop a satellite-powered connectivity platform under a NASA program that aims to demonstrate near-Earth communications by 2025. The partnership seeks to create a commercial space relay service that will use SES’ O3b mPOWER system and other satellites, the company said Tuesday. SES Government Solutions booked a $29 million contract from NASA in April to present a two-way communications system capable of supporting C- and Ka-band radio frequency networks for spacecraft satcom services such as launch and ascent, contingency operations and early-phase operations. Pete Hoene , president and CEO of SES GS, said the company plans to showcase the potential of its O3b mPOWER satellite constellation to support communications with agency assets in near-Earth orbit. NASA expects to procure space communications services from industry by 2030 through the use of multiple long-term contracts. Sign Up Now! Starvision Technologies is a company that received a Department of Defense SBIR/STTR grant for a project entitled: EFFI: Enhanced Field-Foveated Imaging Sensor. The abstract given for this project is as follows: Situational awareness sensors are highly desirable in order to be able to detect, track, image and possibly predict the intent of unknown space objects. Currently designed systems are restricted in their ability to image objects at varying ranges (consequently limited spatial resolution) and the field of coverage is inherently poor. StarVision Technologies Inc. in collaboration with Lockheed Martin proposes an innovative concept EFFI: Enhanced Field-Foveated Imaging System. EFFI is a single sensor system capable of wide field-of-view and narrow field-of-view imaging over any desired field angle in the image. This proposal defines the Phase I work scope required to demonstrate through systems analysis, design and simulations the feasibility of this innovative sensor concept. Successful completion of the Phase I effort will lay the foundation for design, fabrication and testing of the key elements of the sensor design in Phase II.BENEFIT:Military benefits include surveillance satellites for resident object characterization, commercial applications include surveillance and inspection of friendly satellites
York Space Systems is an American aerospace company specializing in small and medium class spacecraft based in Denver, CO. York Space Systems is developing their AESV S-Class platform which leverages a patent-pending design to reduce the cost of spacecraft manufacture by an order of magnitude. The S-Class platform is a 3-axis stabilized spacecraft capable of supporting 90kg payloads with up to 100W of Orbit Average Power (OAP). Designed for mass manufacture and intended for constellations, the S-Class supports a wide range of missions including earth observation and communication; and is capable of steady state operation in any orbit inclination and orientation without redesign. The platform form factor can leverage existing share ride opportunities on ESPAs, or can be adapted to any of the numerous dedicated small launch vehicles currently under development to significantly reduce launch segment costs.
