Jeffrey Runge

With over 35 years of experience as an emergency medicine physician and Federal government executive, Dr. Runge is currently engaged in improving the health and safety of America in the fields of biodefense, health systems, medical preparedness and road safety. Dr. Runge consults with and serves on the boards of companies engaged in data-driven, value based healthcare and others in improving engineering, data acquisition and analysis to mitigate global health and safety threats. Dr. Runge practiced and taught emergency medicine for 20 years in Charlotte, North Carolina while performing research in injury prevention, trauma care, and emergency service delivery. In 2001, he was nominated by President Bush and confirmed by the Senate to head the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. At NHTSA, he instituted programs that led to dramatic declines in U.S. motor vehicle deaths and the lowest highway fatality rate in history. His focus on rollover crashes and crash avoidance technology led to an industry-wide redesign of SUVs to improve their safety as family vehicles. He fostered new regulations leading to better side-impact protection and vehicle stability and a new regulatory framework for fuel economy. In 2005, he was appointed the first Chief Medical Officer of the Department of Homeland Security and was confirmed again by the Senate in 2007 as the founding Assistant Secretary for Health Affairs at DHS. Dr. Runge and his team worked across traditional boundaries in government and the private sector to bring together various stakeholders to improve the security of the homeland and medical response to terrorism and natural disasters. Dr. Runge is a graduate of the University of the South and the Medical University of South Carolina. He has been honored by both institutions as a Distinguished Alumnus. Dr. Runge is board certified in Emergency Medicine and has published over 60 articles in the medical literature.
