William 15 mins ago 152 POWELL, Ala. (WHNT) — A new chief of the Powell Police Department (PPD) has been named in honor of the current former chief who resigned citing professional grievances with city leadership. On his second day as chief, Michael Little sat down with News 19 to discuss his future plans. He is no stranger to this position, having already worked within the PPD. PREVIOUS: Powell appoints new police chief after resignation of Wilson, three officers and city councilman “Everything is going well,” Chief Little said. “It feels good to be home. I really enjoy the city, I love the people of the city and I’m proud to be back. Chief Little is taking over a fairly small operation that is down to one officer, but he plans to hire two more. “That will be enough and I will evaluate it from there, and if we need anything else, I will present it to the mayor and council and see what we can do,” Chief Little said. He took over after the resignation of former chief Gage Wilson. Wilson said in a Facebook post that one of the reasons for his resignation was because his department had not received new equipment so the city could build a new city hall with money he said comes from COVID funds for first responders. School holds prayer vigil for mother, son killed in two-vehicle crash near Russellville City Councilman Reggie Byrum, who spoke on behalf of the mayor’s office, spoke with News 19 after Wilson’s message. “Well, that’s not exactly how it happened, but I don’t really want to dwell on that right now. There are some things that need to be confirmed,” Byrum said. Byrum explained that Wilson’s resignation, along with that of the deputy chief and two other officers, came after the last city council meeting. “We made a motion to hire a sixth officer, and we, I had some questions and some members of the other council had questions, I’m sure, about why does such a small town need of that many officers, when we are already covering more hours than are actually allocated to the police department,” Byrum said. As for the new chief who will take over, the only problem the city will face, he says, is drug-related. “It’s a pretty quiet town, we have drug problems but we have a lot of help from the sheriff’s office, the Drug Task Force and neighboring agencies… We all work together to solve the problems said Chief Little. Overall, the new chief is excited and proud to put the uniform back on in service to his community.
