‘The 10 years, it’s been magical’: Shaw Charity Classic marks milestone anniversary

Aug 6, 2022

Article content At the initial instalment, back in 2013, they erased the record for the largest give in PGA Tour Champions history. They’ve shattered their own mark several times since. Even when the 2020 edition had to be postponed due to pandemic shutdowns, they doled out loads of loot. “I think they’re trying to cross over $90 million, over $100 million. That’s what their goal is, I’m sure,” said Stephen Ames, a former Calgary resident who helped bring this show to town — connecting tournament founder Clay Riddell with some of the tour bigwigs — and now competes annually in the three-round shootout. “I was playing (Wednesday) with Keith MacPhail, who is one of the patrons, and we both recall when Clay and I sat down and started talking about this, his goal was $10 million a year. On the average, we’re actually very close to that. Advertisement 3 Article content Indeed, it is. Clay Riddell was tournament chair until his passing in 2018. He was succeeded by his son, Jim. “I think we all look back and none of us ever really imagined, including my dad when he started this event, that it would turn out to be as successful as it is and that the city would love it as much and that we would have raised as much money for charity as we have. It’s pretty amazing,” Jim Riddell said. “I don’t even think he expected this to turn out the way it did. When he was still alive, it was something that amazed him, how much success it had. And I think he’d be super proud of it now.” He’s not the only one. “The 10 years, it’s been magical,” said Brad Shaw, executive chair and CEO of Shaw Communications, on board since Day 1 as title sponsor. “We started this program to put Calgary on the map a bit more and when you look at the volunteers, the sponsors, the players, the patron group and the partnership of all those pieces … My dad (J.R.) has passed, but I remember him saying, ‘I just can’t believe what the players are saying and how excited they are and how giving they are.’ Advertisement 4 Article content “I was just talking to a gentleman and he’s been a volunteer every year, and he is so thankful. I said to him, ‘Jeez, I should be the one who is so thankful.’ It’s just a reflection of how giving the community is and how participating they want to be and just how fortunate we are. “Even the players, when you talk to them, they won’t miss it.” That’s exactly how Couples, a World Golf Hall of Fame inductee, put it the other day. “I wish I was playing more this year, but this is one that I wouldn’t skip,” he beamed. “I like this tournament a lot.” Asked about his most memorable moments during the 10-year run, Shaw reminisced about Couples’ dramatic victory in 2014. After ‘Boom Boom’ drained a chip-in eagle on No. 18 to force a playoff, he and Clay Riddell were invited to sneak under the ropes to follow Couples and Billy Andrade on the extra hole. Advertisement 5 Article content “Clay and I were pinching each other like, ‘Is this real?’ ” Shaw recalled. “It was extraordinary.” It’ll be a similar reaction come fall, when the Shaw Charity Classic — now a staple on Calgary’s calendar of must-see sporting events — reveals the donation for 2022. A total of 260 assorted charities, all doing terrific work in the community or around the province, will benefit. (As Friday’s opening tee-shot was struck, Shaw was announcing a $100,000 pledge in recognition of the anniversary celebrations). First, there’s some golf to enjoy. The action continues Saturday-Sunday at Canyon Meadows. “That was always the plan — to have a tournament that we did every year instead of one-and-done. It was always to have the same event to look forward to every year and give the whole city something to see,” said Jim Riddell. “I think the patron group is proud of the result, but it’s really the city’s tournament to enjoy. And I think they really do.” Share this article in your social network Share this Story: ‘The 10 years, it’s been magical’: Shaw Charity Classic marks milestone anniversary
