Growing homegrown PR firm living the Wild life

Feb 2, 2022

Author of the article: Article content Post-graduation, working for reputable companies is a great way to gain experience in the world of business. But there comes a time for some — such as Kristen Novak, who grew up in family of entrepreneurs — to hang out their own shingle and be their own creative force. Advertisement Article content Five years ago Novak launched Wild, a Calgary public relations company, and she is celebrating the anniversary with continuous growth. We apologize, but this video has failed to load. Try refreshing your browser, or Growing homegrown PR firm living the Wild life Back to video After graduating from Western University, Novak got her first job with Maple Leaf Sports & Entertainment, working for three years primarily on charity events with the Toronto Maple Leafs and Raptors. Ten years ago she moved to Calgary and worked in the not-for-profit sector, fundraising for Big Brothers Big Sisters before entering the public relations agency life. Starting her own agency, she initially built it up with travel and leisure accounts, choosing the Wild name as a reflection of her own personality — a love of the outdoors, travel and adventure. And travel she certainly has, racking up visits to 35 countries that included hiking to Base Camp on Mount Everest, a four-month African bike ride from Cairo to Cape Town, swimming with penguins in the Galapagos, and has completed three different routes along the pilgrimage walks to Camino de Santiago in northern Spain. In Kananaskis Country, Wild represents Mount Engadine Lodge in Spray Valley Provincial Park. A growing business meant hiring help, and Novak was fortunate in persuading another public relations professional with a passion for skiing, hiking and camping. Erica Morgan, who has been in the communications industry since 2012 and was named as one of the Top 30 under 30 by PR in Canada, joined Novak three years ago as account director. And more recently, Meika English joined the Wild team from her Vancouver office. Close to her West Coast clients, she is also a big boon to Alberta and national clients. One of its success stories is a national influence campaign for Sproud, a Swedish-based brand of healthy plant-based and dairy-free products using yellow split-pea protein. Another international company is Whittaker’s Chocolate — crafted by the same family in New Zealand since 1896 — that is now available across Canada. Among its newer local accounts, Wild has added online farmer’s market CultivatR, Pie Junkie, Culinary Coworking, and the District at Beltline. With a passion for public relations, the small but mighty team at Wild are very confident of its next five years. The pandemic has been tough on many small businesses but Adam countered the problem by supplementing her bricks-and-mortar shop with an online store that is proving quite successful. • Many athletes need support to achieve their goals of competing in international events. The athlete, born in Fort McMurray to Eritrean immigrant parents, lives and trains in Calgary but is currently double majoring in computer science and business administration at the University of Lethbridge. PBA Group and headversity are passionate about strengthening the community, and with a deep connection to sports are incredibly proud to support Abeda as he goes for his dream in Beijing. • Kung hei fat choi to all our Chinese friends in this Year of the Tiger.
