Foreign aid consulting firm Palladium hires UBS for review

Jan 19, 2022

Share Australian born-and-bred consulting and project management firm The Palladium Group has called in the investment bankers to test whether there may be a strategic or financial investor willing to buy into the company. Consulting firm The Palladium Group specialises in advising government and corporate clients on strategy, impact investment and supply chain management. Nicolas Walker Street Talk can reveal Palladium, formerly part of Kerry Packer’s business empire and now privately owned by its staff and founders, has sent Swiss bank UBS on the investor search, contacting major consulting and private equity groups in Australia and offshore to see whether they may be interested in a closer look. Sources said Palladium had been pitched with $40 million to $50 million a year in earnings, driving expectations that the business could attract a $500 million-odd valuation should it find a suitably interested suitor. Palladium’s expected to draw a host of tyrekickers - keen to take a look at the business’ projects, if not the company as a whole. Palladium is heavily involved in high profile government and non-government consulting assignments, specialising in areas including international aid and impact investing. Palladium and its predecessor firms have been operating in Australia for more than 30 years, initially under Packer’s wing, and has grown to have teams on the ground in more than 90 countries worldwide and more than 2500 staff. Advertisement Along the way, it has attracted a host of big name directors including former Australian rugby captain John Eales and former foreign minister Julie Bishop. Its chairman is Australian Kim Bredhauer, while his fellow directors include Brisbane-based Christopher Hirst (also Palladium CEO) and Vanessa Wallace, who is a former Strategy& partner and now also a director at Wesfarmers and SEEK. Palladium Group Holdings, the top entity in the corporate structure, last filed accounts with Australia’s corporate regulator for the year to June 2020. The accounts showed it reported $608 million revenue in the 12-month period, up from $539 million one year prior, and $37 million in normalised earnings before interest, tax, depreciation and amortisation. Its funding included newly arranged debt from the Commonwealth Bank of Australia and HSBC, set up as part of a wider organisational restructure. The accounts said Palladium made most of its money providing management, technical assistance, consulting and program delivery services to government and corporate clients globally. The firm specialises in projects that “create positive impact”, it said, across the health, education, workforce development, governance, public policy, environment and impact investment sectors. The bankers’ search comes nearly seven years after strategy execution consulting firm Palladium merged with GRM Futures Group, in one of a handful of transactions that created the wider Palladium Group.
