Stack Overflow has announced that it is testing a new Reactions feature. The new feature includes a button on answers across Stack Overflow to provide a simple way to say “thanks.”
“We’ve heard from our users that the inability to say “thank you” is frustrating—especially for new users who don’t have enough reputation to upvote or comment. Even when users gain these privileges, they still want to say ‘thanks,’” Stack Overflow wrote in a post . The company said they hope this addition reduces friction for users whose comments are deleted, reduces burden on moderators, and minimizes the time active users spend on flagging and deleting comments. This includes three new updates in the new Windows Insider Preview Build 20150: GPU compute and the new commands wsl –install and wsl –update. GPU compute support spans support for NVIDIA CUDA, which will help enable professionals to use their local Windows machines for inner-loop development and experimentation, according to Microsoft. With the new WSL update, the Linux kernel that is used by WSL 2 distros is now being delivered via Microsoft Update. Additional details are available here . Xamarin.Forms 4.7
Xamarin.Forms 4.7 includes new features and improvements. With simplified grid row and column definitions, users no longer have to specify each column and row definition separately. The addition of multi-binding allows users to connect a target property to a list of source properties and then apply logic to produce a value with the inputs specified. The new tools include the Actions Builder and Actions SDK that will help developers build custom voice apps and services, according to Google. Actions Builder is a web-based IDE that lets you develop, test, and deploy directly in the Actions console. Stack Overflow’s “most loved” languages are those with the highest percentage of survey respondents who currently use the language and want to continue using it. The company also surveyed developers about the languages they currently use but no longer want to use (“most dreaded”), the languages they currently don’t use but are most interested in using (“most wanted”), the languages that draw the highest salaries (“top paying”), and the languages most commonly used (“most popular”). Stack Overflow reasoned that perhaps since Perl was also amongst the most-dreaded languages, it was possible the high salary was set to compensate for the dearth of developers who want to use Perl. Stack Overflow also noted the survey was taken before the COVID-19 virus had impacted every nation worldwide and asked survey readers to keep this in mind when looking at the salary and job data. Last month Tiobe suggested that the C language, commonly used in medical equipment, could be gathering more interest as a result of the pandemic . Stack Overflow ramps up SaaS model as it builds relationships with Microsoft and developers

While Stack Overflow  helps developers and technologists transform business, the company has also reached a place where it must transform as well. As the largest online community for coders to learn and share knowledge, Stack Overflow has built an audience that today includes 50 million monthly unique visitors to its question-and-answer website and another 70 million who access other services on the broader-based Stack Exchange . What draws sizable interest is a jobs product that accounts for half of Stack Overflow’s revenue , but it is a Teams collaboration tool officially launched two years ago  that is showing the most growth and promise for the firm’s future. As with many of the companies its users code for, Stack Overflow is transforming into a software-as-a-service platform. “We know we’re in this beautiful Goldilocks zone of digital transformation where everybody is accelerating, even given the current environment,” said Prashanth Chandrasekar (pictured), chief executive officer of Stack Overflow. “In our Teams business, it’s all about our customers getting value from the collaboration SaaS platform that they’ve signed up for. We are really trying to transform and accelerate into a SaaS company.”
Chandrasekar spoke with Stu Miniman , host of SiliconANGLE Media’s video studio theCUBE. They discussed a major customer win, developer interest in programming tools, impact of the pandemic on learning platforms, and Stack Overflow’s evolving relationship with Microsoft. Historic deal
Stack Overflow’s transition to SaaS has been boosted by a number of factors in recent months. In November, Microsoft Corp. linked its own Teams product with Stack Overflow’s, connecting chat and internal knowledge bases for shared use by developers. That was followed by further integration in March when Stack Overflow announced agreements with Jira, GitHub and Microsoft Teams Enterprise. There are already signs that the move to position Teams as a centerpiece in the company’s portfolio is paying off. “We just closed the largest deal in our company’s history this past week for 30,000 seats at a very large global financial institution,” Chandrasekar said. “More companies are thinking about business continuity, about how they collaborate across their distributed, remote teams, and we have a very significant solution in that space.”
Collaboration across remote teams is a familiar area for Chandrasekar’s company. Even before the global pandemic struck, over 40% of Stack Overflow’s employees worked remotely, including 60% of its marketing team and 80% of its product engineering team, according to the CEO. Interestingly, Stack Overflow conducted its own survey last year and found that there was one country that held a sizable lead over all others in the percentage of developers working remotely. According to the results, the U.S. led the top 10 countries in developers working remotely with 33%. The next closest were India and Great Britain at a comparatively tiny 5%. Solving complex issues
Whether they are working remotely or not, what are developers interested in? Stack Overflow’s data offers insight into this as well. Analysis of data from both GitHub Inc. and Stack Overflow released in March by RedMonk , found that Python was now as popular as Java, with TypeScript — a superset of JavaScript — rising up the charts. “It’s a dramatic amount of impact to help these folks solve their most complex issues on a variety of topics,” Chandrasekar said. “It could be cloud-related topics, security related, full-stack engineering topics like Python or Rust. All of those areas are covered in detail for our community.”
In mid-April, Stack Overflow also released information on the impact of the pandemic on interest in content offerings through Stack Exchange. Not surprisingly, the site saw a 245% boost in traffic for Academia.meta , a community created eight years ago to help users learn how to conduct virtual learning. “Online learning became a huge topic of interest when people went remote,” Chandrasekar said. “You not only had people at home trying to figure out how to school their kids, but you also had teachers in schools trying to find the best set of resources.”
Stack Overflow has made significant changes to its senior management team since last fall. Chandrasekar was hired as its new CEO in September, after holding multiple executive positions with the cloud services provider Rackspace Inc.. He replaced co-founder Joel Spolsky who remains as chairman of the board. In January, Chandrasekar was joined by Teresa Dietrich who left McKinsey New Ventures to become Stack Overflow’s chief product officer. While the company’s new management appears strongly committed to a SaaS transformation, the relationship with Microsoft remains an interesting one to watch. Microsoft purchased developer-focused GitHub for $7.5 billion in 2018, and last week GitHub announced two new features aimed at developer collaboration. “We have a tremendous number of enterprises that have joined our program over the past several quarters, including Microsoft, who is a very happy customer,” Chandrasekar said. “They have 70,000 developers, technologists, and go-to-market folks within Microsoft that are using our product platform to break down walls and be able to move very quickly.”

The popular developer Q&A site Stack Overflow is reducing its workforce by 15%, according to a company spokesperson, affecting 40 employees. Most of the affected employees were furloughed, meaning they keep their health insurance and other benefits. Some were laid off, the spokesperson said. Stack Overflow's Talent business, which helps companies recruit and hire developers, has taken a hit during the coronavirus pandemic. "We took these actions with great care and only after assessing all other options," a Stack Overflow spokesperson told Business Insider. "We did this in order to ensure that we can serve our customers and community in the long-run." Stack Overflow, a popular forum where millions of software developers get their questions answered, has reduced its workforce by 40 employees, or 15% of its total headcount, because of the impact of the coronavirus pandemic on its business, a spokesperson tells Business Insider. Most of the affected employees were furloughed, meaning they can keep their health insurance and other benefits. Some, however, were laid off. The reductions were announced to the company on Tuesday, the spokesperson said. The Stack Overflow spokesperson says its Talent business, which helps companies recruit and hire developers, has taken a hit amid the ongoing crisis, as hiring slows down across the tech industry. The spokesperson says that the company's short-term priority is growing its paid product and advertising businesses so that the furloughed employees can come back to work sooner rather than later. "We took these actions with great care and only after assessing all other options," a Stack Overflow spokesperson told Business Insider. "We did this in order to ensure that we can serve our customers and community in the long-run." Stack Overflow has said that it sees over 50 million monthly unique visitors and over 255 million monthly visits. As  Business Insider reported in October, the company boasts an annualized revenue run rate of $80 million . Previously, Stack Overflow CEO Prashanth Chandrasekar told Business Insider that in addition to its popular developer Q&A forum, the company is focusing on growing its paid, premium products like Talent, Ads, and Teams, which allows companies to build their own versions of Stack Overflow for internal use to share knowledge. Stack Overflow has raised a total of $70 million from investors like Andreessen Horowitz, Spark Capital, and Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos' investment fund Bezos Expeditions, according to PitchBook.
