NVIDIA acquires Gothenburg start-up

Dec 23, 2020

OptiGOT, a Swedish start-up built on over 20 years of cutting-edge research at Chalmers University of Technology, has been acquired by US tech giant NVIDIA. OptiGOT specialises in the design of high-performance VCSEL lasers for high-speed data transfer, consumer sensing and LIDAR. The VCSEL market is expected to grow rapidly in the coming years. The Gothenburg-based company started in 2016 as a spin-off from Chalmers University of Technology. It was founded by researchers Anders Larsson and Johan Gustavsson, and former doctoral student Erik Haglund. The details of the acquisition have not been disclosed. The university’s incubator Chalmers Ventures has been active in the development of OptiGOT since 2016 and supported the start-up during the acquisition process. In a press release announcing the acquisition, Håkan Krook, fund manager at Chalmers Ventures, said: “We are very impressed with the team at OptiGOT who showed a long-term determination in building a company value based on a unique tech competence and entrepreneurship. OptiGOT was also, during an early stage, seen in the global arena attracting market-leading customers.”
