The Student Hotel Joins Forces with OpenUp to Give Its Community Access to Mental Health Professionals

Sep 29, 2021

The service launches during Mental Illness Awareness Week Oct 3-9th and will add to its ongoing mission to provide its community with mental health and well-being resources share this article Photo: The Student Hotel Group   The Student Hotel (TSH), the leader in hybrid-hospitality has announced it will offer OpenUp to TSH community members. They are launching the online service, which provides access to certified mental health professionals and other resources, in tandem with the upcoming worldwide Mental Illness Awareness Week from October 3-9th. It’s a move that adds to the long-standing care and well-being TSH provides to its resident community and staff. Advertisements The OpenUp app will be available at no cost and unlimited access within the TSH community at all of its 15 European locations. OpenUp adds to the ways in which TSH already helps members cope with their mental health including: staff trained to notice mental health challenges, buddies on each floor who host monthly catch ups, event programs including mindfulness, yoga and bootcamps and online events geared toward education on wellness and mind-body health. Mental health of students and young people in particular has been top of mind during the Covid pandemic. A recent Dutch Central Bureau of Statistics report released earlier this month revealed that one in four people between the ages of 18 and 25 indicated that they were experiencing mental health symptoms in the first half of 2021 – an increase of 10 percentage points over 2020. According to a study conducted by The Class Foundation , an Amsterdam-based non-profit think tank focused on improving student living in university cities, TSH scored 63% on measures of well-being, the highest score among all The Class partner operations. Of those 63%, almost 70% reported feeling 'happy' and 'calm' while at TSH. OpenUp will provide free, unlimited access to certified psychologists who are available online and in most users’ native language. The service also provides videos and other resources to support the individual consultations. “Mental health is as important as hot water or Wifi. By offering this service we are investing in the well-being of everyone in our community. And we are committed to making sure it delivers. After this year we will evaluate how it is working and see if any improvements might be needed to make sure our residents truly benefit,” said Frank Uffen, Managing Director of Community and Partnerships at TSH. “OpenUp is on a mission to make mental health accessible for all. We are very happy to partner up with The Student Hotel throughout Europe. This is our first community-focused hybrid hospitality brand as a community partner and it is wonderful to be able to help make a difference in the lives of young people who are struggling more than ever right now,” said psychologist Gijs Coppens, OpenUp’s founder. About The Student Hotel The Student Hotel concept started with one simple observation: that students deserve better. Today, that vision has become reality and grown to encompass all guests with a "student spirit". From design-savvy travellers to next-gen entrepreneurs, TSH welcomes thousands of guests annually to its expanding portfolio of urban campus-style properties across Europe. Purpose-built or housed in historic converted buildings, TSH"s industry-leading concept provides blended spaces to learn, stay, work and play for a night, a week, a month or a year. TSH guests, businesses and local communities embrace its positive impact-driven programming and inclusive culture. Founded in 2012, TSH is headquartered in Amsterdam and employs 450. All TSH properties offer a mixed-use campus with accommodation, bars, restaurants, gyms, retail shops, meeting and event spaces and high-profile, co-working space. With over 11,000 rooms in Europe open and under development, TSH aims to offer a unique experience to its community of international guests. As of today, TSH is operating in 15 European locations: two hotels in Amsterdam and in Barcelona and one in Berlin, The Hague, Delft, Vienna, Groningen, Eindhoven, Maastricht, Rotterdam, Paris, Florence and Bologna.
