It’s also critical to understand just how dire the situation is for our colleagues of color and our industry. One of my most searing memories of 2020 was a presentation by John Hernandez at SRCCON in July who openly asked if it is time to burn legacy newsrooms to the ground and start over. His conclusion was not yet — for now. On the Journalism of Color Slack, there are open conversations about how fed up these journalists are and how many are ready to leave our profession. Not a few dozen — hundreds of them. What else can you do? Embrace being an ally. The burden of fixing our newsrooms should not fall on our colleagues of color. By this point, you should understand the emotional toll and the effort required by journalists of color to do the heavy lifting to “diversify” our profession. “I’m all about allies,” a Black woman leading one of the country’s most influential newsrooms said to me this summer. Believe it when you hear words like that. Do something meaningful and impactful to make things better. Lastly, I have a critical message for every leader of a news organization: Do your job ! Nothing will get better, no change will ever take place, unless you fully commit to leading by word and deed in the coming year. If our industry is going to have a future, it’s on you to lead the way. It’s not enough to listen to your staff. It’s not enough to hire more journalists of color. It’s not enough to make diversity a “priority.” It should be the priority for the year and years ahead. This is an existential crisis for our industry, and it’s up to our senior executives to accept this challenge to make it right. Make a commitment to Vision25 , a collaboration between Maynard Institute, the Online Journalism Association, and OpenNews to commit to building racial equity in our newsrooms. As they say at the end of the Jewish Day of Atonement: May you (our industry) be inscribed in the book of life in the year ahead. Amen to that. It’s a solemn time of holiness and hope, a time of repentance, reflection, and committing to righteous acts in the year ahead. Before we turn the page on 2020, we white journalists should reflect and repent for each of our roles in perpetuating racial inequity in our newsrooms. In 2021, we should commit to creating equitable and anti-racist newsrooms that serve the needs of all our audience and ourselves. We should repent for words spoken and unspoken. I have heard colleagues of color described as “not sophisticated enough,” “not ready,” or “too angry,” and not responded. I’m sure I’m not alone. I’ve been careless with the language that I’ve used in ways that unintentionally hurt others. And have I done enough to recognize the editorial strength of my colleagues of color, to promote them and the values they uphold, and to accept how challenging it can be for them to come to work everyday? Sometimes, but not enough. We should all be asking what we can do in the coming year to avoid our failures of the past. Here are a few suggestions. Reflect and repent

OpenNews’ argument for increased adoption of open source projects is simple: the less time newsrooms spend on developing projects, the more time they can spend reporting stories. “When you’re using a tool that works and works well and you don’t have to build something from scratch, you can do the really important things,” said Ryan Pitts , code lead at Open News, who helped lead the project. “You avoid having to reinvent someone else’s wheel.” That dynamic also works in reverse: Producing code in the open and and collaborators to look at it makes that code better, said Pitts. So far over 20 contributors (including newsroom developers and open source advocates) in the U.S. and around the world have contributed to the project, which is still a work in progress. OpenNews, is, for example, looking for more people to share their stories about cultural roadblocks to adopting open source projects, as well looking for some help on basic editorial suggestions and translations. Alongside the guidebook’s launch, OpenNews has also released Open Project Linter , an open source project that newsrooms can use to develop good practices in documentation and code. The guidebook is a first for OpenNews, which until this point had only applied its collaboration model to producing code. New additions and requests are all handled on GitHub, where there are 47 open issues as of time of writing . Case studies, in particular, are important to the project — even if they’re case studies of failure. “Bad experiences are also great to document,” said Pitts. With its new book, OpenNews wants to help more newsrooms adopt open source projects

Last summer, OpenNews surveyed 514 journalism-focused developers in an attempt to better understand the demographics of the community and learn about participants’ experiences working in newsrooms. 66 percent of survey respondents said they were under the age 35, with 51 percent falling in the 26- to 35-year-old range. Only 8 percent were ages 46 or older. 67 percent of participants identified as male. About 75 percent of US-based respondents identified as non-Hispanic white. OpenNews hopes to use this demographic data to encourage newsrooms to make more diverse hires. “It showed how young and how male this community is at this point,” OpenNews deputy director Erika Owens said. “It sets a baseline for what we can do to broaden it and make sure it does it reflect the rest of the news organization.”
She said news organizations don’t have an excuse to say “we can’t find a person who isn’t a white male, they just don’t exist.”
“If a team has 10 percent women, they’re really out of step with what is reflected in the community overall,” Owens said. “76 percent identified as white. If there aren’t any people of color on your team, you’re not representative of the community.”
One-quarter of respondents said a top priority of the journo-tech community should be a focus on more diversity and inclusivity. The idea for a survey originated in 2015. Brian Hamman , The New York Times’ executive director of technology for news products, and ProPublica deputy managing editor Scott Klein led a session at that year’s SRCCON to discuss a possible census. Taking that feedback, OpenNews worked with Network Impact to develop and conduct the survey. OpenNews plans to continue to conduct a News Nerd Survey annually. Hamman said he wanted to help put out the census to better understand the state of the community in order to help people advance their careers. “For a lot of people in the survey, which is something I saw over my career, they are the first person to ever have their job at their organization,” Hamman said. “There’s not a clear career path for where to go next.”
43 percent of respondents said they’d been working in journalism tech for five or more years, and OpenNews wants to help those developers advance their careers and move up the ranks within newsrooms. “These folks in this 26-35 age range have 5 to 10 years working in this field,” Owens said. They’re getting more established and they need to be supported.”
More than 35 percent of the respondents said they work on teams of two-to-five people. And 10 percent said they were a team of one. Respondents offered a number of suggestions for how OpenNews and the community as a whole could better support those in smaller newsrooms. 16 percent said they’d like more open-source tools, and 15 percent said up-to-date guides on available open-source tools and best practices would be helpful. 14 percent said it’d be helpful to have better access to tools that can be used by non-technologists and another 14 percent said they’d like increased training for top editors and non-technical co-workers. Owens said the data reiterated that OpenNews wants to work to expand its offerings to assist news nerds no matter the size of their newsroom or where they are in their careers. “We really saw in the data something that we were seeing and experiencing in our work at in terms of the opportunity to support the people behind the code better instead of the emphasis just on the code,” Owens said.
