(VIDEO) This is how drones that produce clean electricity work

Jun 19, 2022

June 19, 2022 Drones will be able to take power directly from the wind, once they are tethered to flying kites, thanks to the European Space Agency that has focused on developing together with the company Ampyx Power and with which a greater use of wind energy will be obtained, in which the company has also participated Omnisense. The work will allow the development of an adequate precision take-off and landing system for drones, which they will be able to land automatically on small platforms being designed, in addition, to be able to operate in any type of terrain, no matter how rough it may be, actions that will be carried out with high precision. On the website of the Dutch company www.ampyxpower.com, it is mentioned that “The funding will cover the integration into the navigation solution of a local positioning system that seeks to provide 10 cm of relative positioning accuracy with a 100 Hz update rate and an operating range of up to 1 km. Ultra-wideband positioning techniques will be used to make this happen.” With the NAVISPas the Innovation and Navigation Support program of the ESAthe company hopes to bring forward the autonomous drone that will be able to fly above 200 meters of altitude, with a robust fail-safe navigation system. Which will offer a positioning solution for the takeoff and landing of Ampyx Power’s wind-powered aircraft and which they have called the Compact Airborne Wind Energy System (AWES). The system accesses the highest and most powerful winds, requiring much less material to build. AWES has the potential to be a very profitable way to harvest wind energy by increasing the usability of deployment sites for offshore, offshore and remote land refueling, information that Ampyx has released on its website. . “The project allows us to integrate a local positioning backup system into the existing high-end navigation solution. This novel navigation technology will ensure that our aircraft can fly over the platform with great precision, even in the event of a GNSS failure.”assured the head of Technology at Ampyx Power Michiel Kriiff.
