Smith in recognition of his significant contributions to the field over a lifetime of work. 2019 Committee Chair, Martin Rylance of BP Exploration, presented the honor, noting Dr. Smith's 40-year professional career where, among many achievements, he co-developed the framework for fracturing pressure analysis, which revolutionized fracturing technology. The company was formed in 1984 by Dr. Ken Nolte and Dr. Michael Smith, who co-developed the Nolte-Smith plot for net treating pressure analysis and the 'G' function for fracturing pressure decline analysis. NSI was acquired by Premier Oilfield Group to incorporate NSI's 3-dimensional fracture simulation software, StimPlan™, with the company's geoscience and reservoir engineering solutions. Along with worldwide consulting, he has served multiple times as a SPE Distinguished Lecturer, authored multiple chapters in the SPE Monograph on fracturing, and developed and presented SPE short courses on fracturing pressure analysis. Mike is co-author of the acclaimed book Hydraulic Fracturing and recipient of the SPE Lester C. Uren Award for his contributions to hydraulic fracturing technology.
