All it takes is a smell, a picture, or a song and the memories come flooding back. I often feel Michael helps guide me through decisions.“ Her husband had many health challenges over the years and his COPD (chronic obstructive pulmonary disease) and congestive heart failure were two of many diseases with which he fought a tough battle. Advertisement Article content “The last few months, when Michael was almost fully bed-bound, was hard on both of us,” says Abbott. “Every day was a challenge for him, and it was heartbreaking for me to see him struggle. But I would never change a minute of my time with him because we were together.” Friends say the couple’s love for one another bordered on otherworldly. “I was 19 when I married Michael and he was 42,” says Abbott. “We never thought of there being an age difference. It was a shock at first to some. But everyone saw we were meant to be together.” The couple’s love of ice skating had introduced them. Michael, born in London, England, in 1942, was a world-travelled skating coach when he came to Alberta and met keen-skater Jodi. Abbott, raised in Edson, says it was her late mother who taught her that she could do anything if she put her mind to it. Advertisement Article content “I loved skating and my mother, being a strong community volunteer, told me I needed to give back to the sport,” she says. “I became a figure-skating judge at the age of 16.” Michael coached for several years before retiring and founding two advertising companies in Edmonton. Abbott says Michael became her biggest cheerleader and confidence builder, and added to her mother’s vision. She became a world and Olympic-level figure skating official and judged at the 2010 Vancouver Olympics and the 2014 Socchi Olympics. Also, told at school she was not university material, Abbott went on to gain a doctorate and serve as president and CEO of NorQuest College for a decade. During her tenure at NorQuest, Abbott’s leadership more than doubled the student population and opened a stunning new campus edition in 2017, the Singhmar Centre for Learning. From then on, we were like sisters.” The friendship prospered through the years and when Pamela, the eldest daughter of Blanca and surgeon-husband Luis, married Welshman Nick Cuff four years ago, the Abbotts were there to celebrate with the family. “Blanca’s three daughters became like my three nieces,” says Abbott. “Pamela is now an orthopedic surgeon, Paulina is as bariatric surgeon, and Paula is a dentist and working on a speciality, Maxo-facial surgery.” Advertisement Article content Abbott works long hours daily to help the University Hospital Foundation provide funding to enhance the equipment and research needs of the approximately 10,000 University Hospital physicians, healthcare professionals and hospital staff as they courageously handle the coronavirus pandemic. Frontline staff warn the hospital system is under intense pressure due to capacity issues, and the province announced Friday two new pandemic response units, in Edmonton and Calgary, will be opened to provide extra beds as COVID-19 peaks. “Impassioned work continues at the University Hospital Foundation, and as ‘agents of hope’ we continue to raise funds to better the lives of patients and their families and for health system transformation,” says Abbott. “Many thanks to Cathy Osborne, the University of Alberta Hospital’s chief operating officer and her team for everything they are doing right now for Albertans.” Share this article in your social network Share this Story: Nick Lees: Head of University of Alberta Hospital Foundation's Edson roots serve her well
