Collaboration fostered by Open Loop program in Singapore

Artificial intelligence technology firm BasisAI has run a prototype program with 12 startups in Singapore to help them develop their explainable AI (XAI) solutions, and agreed to a long-term partnership on face biometrics and object detection with one of them. The new collaboration comes under the umbrella of Open Loop , a global experimental governance program spearheaded by the Infocomm Media Development Authority (IMDA) and Personal Data Protection Commission (PDPC), Facebook and various local partners. The program aims at improving Singapore’s AI governance frameworks in the field of AI and machine learning (ML) explainability, thus contributing to the wider adoption of biometrics and other technologies. Open Loop launched in July last year and saw 12 AI startups from the Asia-Pacific region, including Nodeflux , the first Indonesian developer to place its biometric algorithms in the top 25 of Wild category in NIST’s FRVT benchmark, developing XAI solutions based on BasisAI’s proprietary ML platform, Bedrock. “BasisAI was a perfect fit for the Open Loop program,” commented Facebook’s Global Policy Lead for Digital and AI Ethics Norberto Andrade. “As a company invested in advancing and scaling responsible AI practices, and committed to informing and helping build sound AI governance frameworks, we are thrilled to have BasisAI as Open Loop’s technical assistance partner,” Andrade explained. The program lasted six months, closing in January, and saw the creation of various XAI tools. “As a brand that scales responsible AI within enterprises, BasisAI’s speciality is in building robust AI systems that are explainable, fair and easy to maintain,” said Mr Liu Feng-Yuan, Co-founder and Chief Executive Officer of BasisAI . “Efforts in promoting understanding and confidence in responsible AI are crucial as we move towards an AI-enabled world,” he added. According to the CEO, the Open Loop program has shown BasisAI is on the right track in equipping enterprises to deploy real-world, scalable AI systems. Following the end of the Open Loop program, BasisAI signed a long-term partnership with computer vision start-up Nodeflux to collaborate on explainable biometrics. The firms will now jointly focus on the development of facial recognition and object detection solutions , with the intention of improving the public safety applications of these technologies. “Our computer vision systems and products have been implemented in a wide range of sectors such as smart cities, defence and security, banking, retail and wholesale store analysis,” said Adhiguna Mahendra, Nodeflux Chief of AI Research and Product Innovation, commenting on the partnership. “We realize that AI explainability will be a very important component of AI implementation in the future and we gathered valuable insights about XAI under collaboration with BasisAI during the Open Loop program,” Mahendra added. Moving forward, the executive said will utilize this partnership to leverage the Bedrock platform and BasisAI’s deep XAI know-how to strengthen the explainability of Nodeflux’s biometrics and AI solutions.

Nodeflux and BasisAI partner on face biometrics following explainable AI startup program

With more than 10 million residents, Jakarta isn’t just one of the world’s most populous cities, it’s also one of the most congested  — with 13 million motorcycles, 4.4 million cars and millions more trucks and vans. The costs are heavy for Indonesia’s capital, including lost productivity, wasted fuel and air pollution. The city government faces a related cost, as well: unpaid road tax – to the tune of 2 trillion Indonesian rupiah (US $142 million) every year. This lost revenue puts a gaping hole in the government’s budget for healthcare, education and other services. But recently the city gave a green light to a smart city initiative that, using NVIDIA AI technology, already recovered 140 billion Indonesian rupiah (nearly $10 million) in a four-month trial run. The initiative, called Jakarta Smart City, was tasked with solving the vehicle-tax collection problem. While the government has a comprehensive database of vehicles with expired registrations, it couldn’t track them on the road. For help, JSC turned to Nodeflux , a domestic company  that focuses on delivering vision AI solutions for public safety, traffic monitoring and law enforcement. “Nobody has done it before, so we collaborated with JSC to solve the unpaid vehicle tax issues.” said Meidy Fitranto, co-founder and CEO of Nodeflux, a member of the NVIDIA Inception accelerator program for AI startups. Jakarta Smart City and Nodeflux use NVIDIA Metropolis to identify vehicles with unpaid road tax. The company developed a system based on NVIDIA Metropolis , an application framework for Internet of Things and smart cities use cases benefiting from intelligent video analytics. Nodeflux is also a member of the NVIDIA Metropolis Software Partner program , which, Fitranto says, brings credibility when talking to potential customers. The system uses the nearly 8,000 cameras already in place around Jakarta, as well as AI, to convert unstructured visual data into insights that the government can use to identify and track vehicles with unpaid tax. Proof of Concept Shifts into High Gear
Nodeflux developed license plate recognition (LPR) software, based on its VisionAIre platform and running on NVIDIA GPUs, to identify and read license plates for all vehicle types. Using deep learning algorithms, the software can adapt to real conditions such as different types of license plates and weather conditions. Nodeflux VisionAIre was tested extensively in a four-month proof of concept covering six of the city’s high-traffic areas – Cawang, Jembatan Merah, Kebayoran Lama, Kemang, Kuningan and Tomang. “The proof of concept was an essential part of this project as it allowed our VisionAIre platform to boost its capability in identifying license plates,” said Fitranto. “Captured data can then be compared with the database of the Jakarta City Revenue Agency, and insight about vehicles with expired registration can be collected.”
The results were huge. Over four months, the software identified more than 64,000 vehicles with expired license plates and recovered more than 140 billion Indonesian rupiah in tax revenue. “Using TensorRT as our inference framework, we managed to run our license plate recognition analytics and reach a performance of 0.02ms in latency and 49 images per second in throughput, with the NVIDIA P4 GPU,” said Fitranto. “We have already started the benchmark with T4 and seen an improvement of 0.01ms in latency and 59 images per second in throughput.”
Nodeflux believes that the deep learning platform would’ve been impossible without NVIDIA technologies. “We wouldn’t have been able to develop and deploy LPR without NVIDIA accelerators, and now moving to T4 should bring further gains. TensorRT runs and influences our deep learning model as well,” said Fitranto. NVIDIA technologies such as CUDA-X libraries , including cuDNN, have helped in optimizing the company’s software and solutions. Further Smart City Work Gets the Green Light
Riding the success of its vehicle tax collection program, the Jakarta Smart City initiative is now looking to extend its work to improve inter-agency collaboration, which remains an issue. “In developing AI, JSC recognizes the importance of collaboration,” said Atika Nur Rahmania, Jakarta Information, Communication and Statistics Agency Head of JSC. “Therefore, we are inviting multiple startups to improve and develop solutions for urban problems and make Jakarta a playground to improve and develop innovations.”

Adopsi teknologi kecerdasan buatan menunjukkan tren yang positif di dunia industri. Berdasarkan studi berjudul IDC Asia Pacific Enterprise Cognitive/AI Survey pada Juli 2018, ditemukan bahwa tingkat adopsi AI di Asia tenggara mencapai 14 persen, naik 8 persen dari tahun sebelumnya. Di Indonesia, sebanyak 24,6 persen organisasi bisnis telah mengadopsi kecanggihan AI, menjadikan Indonesia sebagai negara dengan tingkat adopsi tertinggi dibandingkan negara-negara lain, seperti Thailand (17,1%) dan Singapura (9,9%).

Indonesian AI company Nodeflux is the first in the country to be included on the National Institute of Standards and Technology’s (NIST’s) Face Recognition Vendor Test ( FRVT ) top 25 algorithms by performance in the Wild category of the Verification ranking in September, the company announced. Nodeflux competed against 90 other international facial recognition technology companies and organizations. The National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) was founded in 1901 and it is one of the leading science laboratories in the U.S. The institution is responsible with creating measurement solutions and establishing global standards by encouraging tech innovation. The Facial Recognition Vendor Test analyzes the accuracy and efficiency of AI-based facial recognition and the opportunities it can deliver industry-wide. Based on its three categories – Visa, Mugshot and Wild DataSet – each technology in the competition is analyzed based on performance in certain use cases such as retail, security and surveillance, and smart cities and with multiple ethnicities, genders and ages. The assessment of the technology involves a data comparison between input data and faces collected from actual footage to determine the match rate. The method looks at 1:1 (one-to-one) Verification comparison with 1 ‘reference’ image; and 1:N (one-to-many) comparison with many images of faces from various angles. Nodeflux facial recognition is included in the Wild 1E – 4 category and proved very effective, the company says, confirming it is ready for implementation. “NIST’s benchmark helps confirm Nodeflux’s experience and excellence in vision AI technology. Ranking 25th in the Wild Dataset category is such an achievement for Nodeflux, especially when you consider the competition.
