SAN FRANCISCO — Oakland High star point guard Money Williams went to his first Warriors game when he was 10 years old. He remembers being in awe when Stephen Curry hit a half-court shot. He had a bird’s eye view of the game, sitting all the way in the nose bleeds because that’s all his family could afford, he said. Thinking back to that fond memory makes Tuesday all the more wild in Williams’ eyes. Seven years later, Williams found himself at Chase Center alongside his high school teammates, who were invited by the Warriors to celebrate the Wildcats making history earlier this month when they won the program’s first state championship. “It feels good,” a beaming Williams said. The Oakland High team, which stunned Buena High School in the Division III title game March 10, was honored at center court Tuesday shortly before tip-off for the Warriors-Pelicans game. The teens gathered stood as the Pelicans and Warriors finished warming up on each side of the group. They looked up to watch as the jumbotron played highlights from the team’s historic run before the group was greeted with a loud cheer from the home crowd. Related Articles
“It’s big for these kids,” Oakland High coach Orlando Watkins said. “Half of these kids, the Warriors are their favorite team. Steph is their favorite player. And now to be here on the court where he’s playing at, seeing the game and then after the game, seeing Steve Kerr [and some players], that’s big.”
Before the game, Kerr discussed the importance of celebrating the success of local teams, noting Golden State has welcomed past champions. The Warriors plan to host the Oakland Tech girl’s basketball team on Friday. “The game is connected from the youth level all the way through the NBA,” Kerr said. “You get a lot of young players who are NBA fans, Warriors fans… So I’m really excited that we’re doing that.”
Tuesday is a memory that will stick with Williams, a graduating senior who committed to play at the University of Montana next season. “It feels good, we made history,” said Williams, who’s favorite player is Klay Thompson. “We’re putting on for the city and it feels good that the Golden State Warriors are acknowledging our accomplishments.”

SAN FRANCISCO — Golden State has been teetering the playoffs and play-in line and knew how badly it needed to beat the New Orleans Pelicans, who entered Tuesday just a half-game behind the Warriors in the Western Conference standings. And while the focus wasn’t all there in the first half, the Warriors, propelled by Stephen Curry and Jordan Poole, overcame a 17-point halftime deficit to pick up a much-needed 120-109 win over the Pelicans. Stephen Curry scored 39 points, Jordan Poole added 21, and Golden State (40-37) regained control of the sixth seed, sitting a half-game ahead of the Minnesota Timberwolves with five games left in the regular season. Curry and Poole led the Warriors in their second-half comeback, scoring 22 and 15 points, respectively, over the final two frames. The Warriors seemed to have carried over their execution problems from the end of their disappointing loss Sunday to Minnesota into Tuesday’s game. They spoiled a strong opening minute with costly fouls and careless turnovers, tallying 14 giveaways in the first two quarters alone. The Warriors were up by three when Gary Payton II checked in at the 3:47 mark in the first. The Pelicans scored 11 unanswered points over the next two minutes, building their lead to eight. Payton fouled Ingram as he launched a near half-court shot in the final second of the opening quarter. Ingram would go on to sink all three free throws to put the Pelicans up 36-25 after one. The intensity went up a notch in the second quarter. Frustration built up as the Warriors struggled to keep up with the Pelicans, who started to pull away. Draymond Green dipped his shoulder and collided with Brandon Ingram as the Pelicans forward went out in transition. The two came face-to-face and exchanged words before their teammates separated them. Each was assessed a technical foul, Green’s 17th of the season meaning he’ll have to cough up $5,000. Green was also whistled for a Flagrant 1 foul. On the Warriors’ next possession, Green got called for an offensive charge when he knocked over Pelicans guard Herbert Jones. Green was irate after being called for his third foul of the first half, and Kerr temporarily subbed him out. The Warriors chipped away at the Pelicans’ 17-point halftime lead. Curry scored nine of the Warriors’ 11 points over the final 1:37 of the third to pull within four. Poole scored back-to-back layups to give the Warriors their first lead since the first quarter with 9:10 remaining in the game. Golden State would never trail again the rest of the night. The Warriors host the San Antonio Spurs on Friday.

SAN FRANCISCO — Stephen Curry had 39 points with eight 3-pointers, eight rebounds and eight assists, Jordan Poole added 21 points with consecutive layups that gave Golden State the lead early in the fourth quarter, and the Warriors rallied past the New Orleans Pelicans 120-109 on Tuesday night in a testy, playoff-like matchup in late March. Klay Thompson scored 17 and hit five 3s to set a new single-season career high of 278, which leads the NBA. The Warriors moved up a spot into sixth place in the crowded Western Conference standings, a half-game up on Minnesota and 1 1/2 games ahead of New Orleans. Golden State lost 99-96 at home to the Timberwolves on Sunday, so coming back from 20 down to win this one was key as the defending champions try to avoid the play-in round. The top six teams are guaranteed playoff berths.
