John Martinson has been a venture capitalist for 40 years, participating in more than 200 equity financings and serving as a director of 55 companies. He is well known in the software industry, Mid-Atlantic region business community, and nationally in the private equity industry.
Martinson Ventures makes investments ranging from $250K to $3.5M. John targets information technology businesses serving healthcare, education, financial and other applications.
John founded Edison Partners in 1986. Edison Partners has raised eight partnerships with more than $1 billion capital. Edison has invested in over 210 growth businesses, and exited more than 155 companies.
Edison focus has been software businesses with $5-20 million revenue located in the eastern United States. Initial investments range from $4 – 12 million. Cumulative investment per company ranges from $8 – 20 million. Edison Partners has made over 25 investments in each of the following sectors: Financial Technology, Healthcare IT, Interactive Marketing and Enterprise 2.0.
John is General Partner for Edison IV-VII. He transitioned leadership of the firm to Chris Sugden in 2013. John serves on the Edison Investment Committee and portfolio company boards.
He is former Chairman of the National Venture Capital Association, serving as a director for eight years. John received NVCA service Award. John is Co-founder and former Chairman of the New Jersey Technology Council. He is former Chairman of Greater Philadelphia Venture Group, which merged into PACT. John received the PACT Legend Award in 2016. John launched the New Jersey Venture Fair in 1995.
John earned a B.S. in Aeronautical Engineering from the United States Air Force Academy, an M.S. in Astronautics from Purdue University, and an MBA from Southern Illinois University. All three institutions honored John with top alumni accomplishment award. He received honorary doctorates from Rider, Rowan, and Thomas Edison Universities.
