Rockwater Energy Solutions buys developer of water-treatment technology

Jul 10, 2014

Email  |  Google+  |  Twitter  |  Facebook Rockwater Energy Solutions, Inc., a water-management company active in the Eagle Ford Shale, has purchased Neohydro Corp., a developer of water-treatment technology for the oil industry. This transaction solidifies a partnership struck by the two Houston-based companies in 2012 and will expand water-treatment options for operators in the Eagle Ford and other oil-and-gas formations, company officials say. Drought conditions and increasingly stringent environmental regulations are forcing oilfield operators to recycle a growing percentage of the water they use during the hydraulic fracturing process, which involves injecting chemical- and sand-infused water into shale formations to unlock oil and gas. The water otherwise must be disposed of in special, state-permitted injection wells. Got Energy? Sign up for our Energy Inc. newsletter here. Under the deal, Rockwater now owns Neohydro's Pathocell technology, which uses electricity to stimulate a chemical reaction that reduces contaminants in wastewater so it can be reused to fracture new wells. “What our customers want is a cost-effective solution to treat produced and flowback water to a level compatible with hydraulic fracturing fluids,” says Larry O’Donnell, Rockwater's CEO. Officials with the two companies did not reveal financial details of their transaction. Rockwater customers have used Neohydro's technology, deployed on mobile rover units, in Texas' Eagle Ford and Permian Basin and in Utah, Colorado, Wyoming, Oklahoma and Canada, according to company officials. “We’re incredibly proud of what we’ve achieved over the past two years,” says Pathocell inventor Dean Themy , who has joined Rockwater as general manager for the Neohydro technology. “Rockwater has given us access to the marketplace, industry know-how, and the ability to scale our resources to develop solutions that are changing the way water treatment is performed in the oilfield.” Page 1
