In the 1970s, National Semiconductor was looking around the world for new capacity. In his book SPINOFF, National CEO Charlie Sporck describes his encounter with France. ”France expressed an interest in having us locate within that country, but the plain fact is that we did not trust the French government and the commitments they offered,” wrote Sporck, “some years later, as our penetration of the French semiconductor market approached 10%, the French government hinted that our continued sales growth in that country would be stymied unless we established some sort of French joint venture.” ”It seemed like a good idea at the time, and we built a facility near Aix-en-Provence to produce CMOS silicon gate devices,” continued Sporck, “National Semiconductor provided the technology, and most of the money for the plant came from the French government through a partner company called St. Gobain-Pont-a-Mousson.” ”The facility, near Marseilles in Southern France, was successful and productivity was excellent,” recounted Sporck, “we were ready to revise our opinion of doing business with the French government when, to our astonishment, the venture was ‘nationalised’. In return for our investment of time, money, technology and the efforts of many of our talented people, the French venture gave National Semiconductor one dollar.” ”The whole sorry business,” concluded Sporck, “proved the wisdom of our earlier reluctance to do business with the French government.” Recommended Articles
