Egg company being acquired by Post Holdings faces false advertising claim Oct 17, 2016, 6:58am CDT Industries & Tags Angela Mueller ReporterSt. Louis Business Journal Bizspace Spotlight Davidson's Safest Choice eggs Davidson's Safest Choice An Illinois egg supplier that is being acquired by Post Holdings Inc. is facing a complaint of false advertising. The Humane Society of the United States has filed a complaint with the Federal Trade Commission against Lansing, Illinois-based National Pasteurized Eggs, which sells eggs under the Davidson's Safest Choice Eggs brand, the Chicago Tribune reports. The complaint calls on the agency to investigate possible violations of false-advertising law. Davidson's Safest Choice eggs Davidson's Safest Choice The animal rights agency is taking issue with the claim that the eggs are "all natural" and packaging that depicts an idyllic farm scene when some of the eggs are produced by caged hens, the newspaper reports. Some of Davidson's eggs are from cage-free hens. "No reasonable consumer would see the verdant imagery and 'all-natural' claims and think of a complex of factory farms owned by National Pasteurized Eggs, a geographically widespread egg-producing corporation, where hens are confined in cramped, filthy cages and never see the light of day," the complaint states. St. Louis-based Post Holdings announced in September that it had agreed to buy National Pasteurized Eggs. Upon the deal's closing, which is expected in the first quarter of Post's fiscal 2017, National Pasteurized Eggs will be combined with Post's Michael Foods egg business.
