‘There are many difficulties to being deaf, but there’s also a way around all ofthem’

Apr 1, 2021

Deaf-defying When I was a baby forty nine years ago, it was my grandmother who spotted I was deaf. The door would slam and I never responded. My mum, Avice, took me to get tested and was told I would never get a job and would have to learn sign language to communicate. She was advised I should go to the school for the deaf in Cabra but instead she took the view I should have the same opportunities as any other child and so sent me to the mainstream school in Sligo where my father taught. My mother was also a teacher but gave this up to concentrate on helping me learn how to speak and lip read, and then many years later, to help my brother who was also born deaf. She would sit me down with a microphone and repeat the sounds over and over. She made it fun and her patience was incredible. Her dedication meant I could read and write aged three and when I started primary I had the reading ability of an eight-year-old. Over-prepared I would read my school books at the start of term and have the maths problems solved before we got to them. In my work at the library I need to feel on the ball all the time. I’m always thinking ahead to possible scenarios, I would not be very relaxed. This need to be one step ahead drives me but also means I have a tendency to get stressed and I remind myself to focus on one thing at a time; not to be worrying about things that have not happened. Shelf awareness My first job was in the library at my secondary school in Sligo. They needed someone to stay back to catalogue the books and I loved this. I’ve always adored libraries and would visit my local one once a week and fly through the books. Today I can’t walk past a bookshop without spending a fortune. When I went to the National College of Art and Design to study fine art I worked in the library there too. My mother suggested I do Library and Information Studies in UCD and before the Masters I did some work experience in the National Library so I could get a sense of it. Dr Pat Donlon was the director and she kindly allowed me to work there for free for a few months – from the start I took to it. I went off to UCD and returned to the National Library to catalogue the print and drawing collection. They kept renewing my contract until I was made permanent and I worked in different areas such as education outreach before heading into the manuscript and rare books section – where I happily remain today. Adapting to remote Meeting my colleagues online was initially difficult. Zoom did not really work for me and we moved over to Google Meet which has live captions. Big groups have to do Zoom but when this happens I have figured out a workaround and I will use Google Meet myself for the automatic speech to text. Even when we go back to meetings in the library, I might bring Google Meet with me. While we have to wear masks this will be essential. In recent months, we were able to do a complete stock check, fully concentrate on our online catalogue and transcribe all our records from the source to the catalogue. Coordinating this is a big job but it is something we always wanted to do and the pandemic provided time we would never have had. Business Newsletter
