In the European Union (EU) and the United States, this number rises to 120 million patients. Typical solutions such as drugs, invasive devices, or even surgery have proven to be “ineffective and have various side effects,” according to Mowoot. Four out of five people affected by spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, or Parkinson’s disease are also considered to be a potential market for the company. El Instituto Europeo de Innovación y Tecnología en Salud ( EIT Health ) ha destinado 5,5 millones de euros para apoyar 11 startups europeas a través del programa Start-up Rescue Instrument . El objetivo de este programa es dar respuesta a la pandemia y apoyar a los emprendedores en un momento en que el capital riesgo podría reducir sus inversiones en este tipo de compañías. Así lo prevé el informe European Startups, avalado por la Comisión Europea y el Parlamento Europeo, que cuantifica en un 30-40% la importancia de los fondos recaudados por las nuevas empresas en Europa mediante el capital riesgo, y alerta del peligro de no abordar dicho impacto habida cuenta de que las startsups europeas emplean a dos millones de personas. Mowoot es la única startup española en la lista de 11 compañías que recibirán financiación dentro del programa Startup Rescue Instrument. En concreto, EIT Health coinvertirá hasta 500.000 euros y se hará con una participación en la compañía. Fundada por el emprendedor Markus Wilhelms, Mowoot ha desarrollado un dispositivo que simula un masaje abdominal para tratar el estreñimiento crónico en pacientes con distintas enfermedades que reducen su movilidad. Para su desarrollo, Mowoot ha contado con la colaboración de los médicos y fisioterapeutas del centro de neuro-rehabilitación Institut Guttmann. A través de cientos de entrevistas con pacientes, los impulsores de la compañía constataron el gran impacto que tiene el estreñimiento crónico en la calidad de vida de las personas con lesión medular u otras patologías neurológicas. Tras meses de investigación, se desarrolló una novedosa solución no-invasiva y no-farmacológica con el objetivo de evitar o reducir el uso de laxantes, y que consiste en un dispositivo que emula el masaje abdominal específico de colon que realizan los terapeutas profesionales para tratar el estreñimiento.
