The Monsal Trail, near Bakewell, just over an hour away from Manchester, not only offers breathtaking views of Monsal Dale, it also offers a traffic-free route along an abandoned railway line. The 8.5-mile trail can be used by walkers, cyclists, horse riders and wheelchair users. The trail was formally opened in 2011, allowing the public to see the tunnels for the first time since the Midland Railway line closed in 1968. The route stretches from Blackwell Mill, in Chee Dale, to Coombs Road at Bakewell so is not short of impressive views. Dotted throughout the route are old railway tunnels, the longest ones around 400m long and lit up during daylight hours, creating a walk or cycle which is like no other in the Peak District. Four of the railway tunnels remained closed until 2011 for safety reasons, but today the trail is fully open. For those interested in cycling, bikes can be hired from nearby Hassop Station and Blackwell Mill. Monsal Trail (Image: David Martin / geograph.org.uk) There are hundreds of things to see along the Monsal Trail, including wildlife, geology, industrial and rail heritage. The trail is a way-marked route with coordinated interpretation panels and listening posts to help visitors enjoy what the trail has to offer. One of the main highlights along the Monsal Trail is the Monsal Viaduct, which is now of historic and architectural interest. Other sights along the route include Cressbrook Mill and Litton Mill.
