The two firms announced the merger, one of the most significant among Chinese Internet companies to date, earlier today. UCWeb will join UC Mobile, one of Alibaba’s business unit as Alibaba preps for its U.S. IPO. Though Alibaba did not disclose how much the deal is worth, it did say that it is worth more than the $1.9 billion paid for 91 Wireless by Baidu last year, formerly the biggest deal in China’s Internet sector. ( Techcrunch ) Amazon.com plans local services marketplace this year: Amazon.com Inc later this year plans to launch a marketplace for local services, a broad term that encompasses anything from babysitters to handymen to birthday clowns, beginning with a single market, several people familiar with the matter said. ( Reuters ) Dropbox buys MobileSpan, a ticket to enterprise security: Dropbox is the latest Silicon Valley company with a penchant for retail therapy. After acquiring DropTalk last Thursday, the cloud storage company has purchased MobileSpan, a startup that enables enterprise employees to securely access corporate content located behind a firewall.
