Slip and slide: Crews work around the clock to address slick conditions on Edmonton pathways, city sidewalks

Feb 11, 2022

Photo by David Bloom /Postmedia Article content Icy conditions are wreaking havoc on Edmonton sidewalks and pathways amid a lengthy freeze-thaw cycle that city crews are working around the clock to address. Advertisement Article content Try refreshing your browser, or Slip and slide: Crews work around the clock to address slick conditions on Edmonton pathways, city sidewalks Back to video In an update to media Thursday morning, the city’s snow and ice supervisor of active pathways Valerie Dacyk said crews are working around the clock to address ice buildup on streets and walking paths. The city’s goal is to respond to all locations within 48 hours, prioritizing areas within 24 hours that could provide mobility challenges around facilities such as schools and seniors centres. Dacyk said teams are also addressing problem spots that are reported by citizens via 311 as soon as possible. Due to the high daytime temperatures this week, Dacyk said the goal is to clear these pathways down to bare pavement to prevent ponding that would just freeze over again. Where that isn’t possible, a chip product is being applied to improve traction for residents. Advertisement Article content “Our active pathway crews are focusing on mitigating ice in areas most susceptible to ice formation. Our inventory in the river valley is more prone to icing over, as are areas on the south side of intersections that receive more shade,” she told reporters. “We’re monitoring the conditions and hearing from Edmontonians and we want them to know that we are making progress on the things that are important to them.” Clogged catch basins City crews have also responded to 34 per cent of concerns about ponding near catch basins as snow and ice continues to melt. With higher windrows due to larger amounts of snowfall, and the city’s residential snow removal pilot that saw streets cleared to bare pavement, significant ponding and blockage is forming around catch basins throughout the city. Crews have addressed the issues at 1,200 of 3,479 catch basins where there have been complaints received by residents through 311, Dacyk said. There are more than 63,000 catch basins in the city. Residents are also being reminded to clear sidewalks in front of their properties as quickly as possible to address icy conditions and ensure sidewalks are safe for pedestrians. From Dec. 20 up until Wednesday, the city has received 3,448 complaints for snow and ice on the sidewalk and issued 647 tickets for the bylaw offence. “In the event that the ice and snow cannot be removed down to bare pavement, especially during thaw-freeze conditions, we ask Edmontonians to ensure that sidewalks are as safe as possible,” city spokeswoman Chrystal Coleman said in an email to Postmedia. “Sand or gravel may be used as a temporary measure until such time that all ice can be removed. This helps to ensure the safety and accessibility for all pedestrians, services personnel and emergency services workers.” Suresh Korivi clears ice and melt water from his front sidewalk in Edmonton’s Tamarack neighbourhood on Thursday, Feb. 10, 2022.
