Catching Up with Velocity Fund $25K Winner, Micromensio

Nov 13, 2018

Catching Up with Velocity Fund $25K Winner, Micromensio 2018 Last July, Micromensio pitched and won $25,000 at the 22nd Velocity Fund Finals (VFF). The company also won the $10K hardware prize. We caught up with Brendan Crowley, Co-Founder & CEO of Micromensio, for a post-VFF update. Micromensio is now a Velocity Garage company. Micromensio has designed a low-cost, single-use, wireless, CMOS sensor system-on-chip that can be placed directly in a liquid sample and perform biological or chemical measurements. Q: How has your company developed since winning VFF? Brendan Crowley (BC): The exposure of VFF has helped get our name out there. We have been busy with completing required administrative tasks, reaching out to potential customers, and working with advisors to flesh out our business plan. Q: What is your company currently working on? BC: Our goal is to get our technology in customer’s hands to obtain further market validation and to obtain feedback that we can incorporate into product development. We are currently working out the details for running a study with a company developing bacteriophage products. We are also looking to raise funding. Q: What do you enjoy most about building a startup? BC: It is a huge learning opportunity, especially for a first-time founder. It is exciting to try and take technology developed in an academic lab and turn it into a commercial product that could benefit the world. It has also been great meeting a lot of new people and seeing how much support there is for entrepreneurs. Q: What did you like most about competing at VFF? BC: It was a great learning experience. We got great feedback from the Velocity team, and our pitch improved significantly in the weeks prior to VFF. It was a fantastic opportunity to present in front of a large public audience and to hear feedback from many different people. Q: Are there any tips you can give to startups that are pitching? BC: Definitely seek out the advice of people who have done this before when crafting your slides and pitch. You need people to identify with what you are pitching. Start practising the pitch a couple weeks beforehand and practice a lot. Recording yourself (audio and video) is really helpful. Missed Micromensio’s pitch?
