Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most lethal cancer in the U.S. and Europe, but also the most preventable with early detection providing survival rates above 90%. Annual testing costs per patient are minimal, especially when compared to late-stage treatments of CRC which cost patients an average of $38,469 per year. The American Cancer Society estimates that in 2021 there will be approximately 149,500 new cases of colon and rectal cancer in the U.S. with 52,980 resulting in death. What makes a planet a planet? The answer turns out to be rather contentious. The official definition of a planet, as defined by the International Astronomical Union (IAU) is that a planet must satisfy three conditions:
It must orbit the sun. It must be in hydrostatic equilibrium. It must have cleared its orbital neighborhood. By this definition there are just eight planets in our solar system, most notably excluding Pluto. This has stirred all manner of controversy, even among astronomers. Several alternative definitions have been proposed, but a new study argues we should look to history for the solution. The early definition of a planet was an object that moved against the stars over time. In historical astrology, there were stars, transitory objects such as comets, and planets. Thus, the sun and moon were considered planets, but not the Earth. With the rise of the heliocentric model, objects that orbit the sun were planets, meaning that Earth was a planet, but so was the moon. Throughout the 1600s and 1700s, this was the standard. When Galileo discovered four moons of Jupiter, he referred to them as the Medicean planets. When Cassini discovered Saturn's moon Titan, he referred to it as a new planet. The use of "moon" as a general object also dates to this time. Galileo coined the term in 1632. For Galileo, a moon is a planet that orbits another planet, named after the first of that name. Planet and moon were not exclusionary terms. As Galileo demonstrated in 1611, stars shine of their own light, while planets only shine through reflected sunlight. This simple definition held well into the 1800s. When astronomers discovered Ceres in 1801, it was clearly a planet. The same with Pallas, Juno, and Vesta. All were planets because they certainly weren't stars. But after a dozen worlds were found between Jupiter and Mars, many astronomers argued that they should be not planets, but asteroids. This began a gradual shift to the idea that planets were large bodies orbiting the sun. Asteroids and moons should not be considered planets. When Pluto was discovered in 1930, it was clearly a planet because it was neither an asteroid nor a moon. But by the end of the 20th century, the simple definition became problematic. We found out that many large moons such as Io are geologically active. Titan has an atmosphere even thicker than Earth's. Pluto has mountains and complex geology but is even smaller than the moon. None of these meet the IAU definition of a classical planet, but it's hard to argue that they are not worlds as complex as Mars or Venus. So what makes a planet a planet? Based on their work, the team argues that the IAU definition is a poor one. The general public dislikes it because the definition excludes Pluto, but more importantly, many scientists ignore the definition and still refer to bodies such as Titan, Pluto, Ceres, and others as planets. What seems to be the most consistent defining factor is that of complex geology and geophysics. If we define planets by their geophysical qualities, then the Galilean moons are planets, as is Pluto, as is Pluto's moon Charon, as is our own moon. Anything with a diameter larger than about 500km would be a planet, meaning that our solar system alone has more than a hundred planets. Explore further

Background: Metzger, 45, got an international relations degree from Pomona College but didn’t join the industry for more than a decade afterwards. Her father, a real estate developer, showed a commercial space to a New York Life managing partner who said there were opportunities at the company. Her husband preceded her in the industry, closing his business building race cars and joining New York Life while Metzger was pregnant with her third child. After giving birth she found herself in the office helping out on a regularly basis. Before long, he and his team said she should formally join the team and try out financial services. She went on to intern at Paine Webber after stints helping out at her children's schools and doing some wedding planning. She and her husband now work together at Crown Wealth Strategies in conjunction with New York Life. Investment Philosophy/Strategy: Metzger and her team liken their investment approach to a GPS, mapping out a path to current and long term goals. Competitive Edge: While Metzger currently uses lots of technology to inform her practice, she is also aware of the conventional wisdom that robo-advice will eliminate the need for financial advice and finds it unlikely based on her interactions with clients who need a connection and to be counseled in a way that robo-advisors cannot offer. “It's very easy for me to go online and do a profile and find out whether you're a 60/40 or an 80/20 investor. It gets much more complicated when you have a child with special needs or want to retire early,” she says. “These are the things that are intangible.”
Best Advice: A colleague once gave Metzger the helpful advice: “It’s not your plan, it’s their plan.”
Early in her career she would put together a financial plan that was theoretically or statistically ideal but failed to realize that it is their money and her view of a perfect plan may not be exactly what they had in mind. “At the end of the day, what we have to understand is a client's goals and dreams are particular to that client,” she adds. “So we might think we have these great, amazing ideas but if a client can't understand it, or it doesn't serve the client, or it's not easy for them to do, they're going to fail.” 
With that in mind, her third meeting with new clients is a draft planning meeting during which she will offer input but ultimately be guided by their feedback. Biggest Challenge: Her biggest challenge is scale,  trying to expand her practice without losing any of the high quality service she aims to offer to every client. Mentors: In joining New York Life, Metzger met colleagues who changed how she viewed the financial services industry. When she was younger, she had an encounter with a financial advisor in her hometown in which she was refused help because she had too small an account. She says she has encountered far more accommodating advisors during her career. She also made specific mention of John Kim, the former president of New York Life who started the firm’s venture capital fund, as a mentor who helped her rethink how she served clients. Lessons Learned: The key lesson she has learned is to lead with listening, an especially important approach as she is talkative by nature. Metzger has also come to realize many financial concepts sound like another language to clients. Therefore it is important to explain things thoroughly to compensate for the issues many people have talking about money. Biggest Client Misunderstanding: Along those lines, Metzger finds many clients get confused about financial products with professionals in her position often underestimating how hard they can be to understand. Investment Outlook: Metzger says that the market has been “unique” since 2008 and she expects volatility is here to stay. This means strategies for those close to retirement have to be far more conservative than for younger clients. She remains bullish on the economic outlook as the Covid-19 pandemic looks increasingly under control and will likely become endemic rather than the pandemic that shut down the economy just over a year ago.
