Memphis tech startup on hot streak

Oct 7, 2015

Michael Sheffield Senior Staff writerMemphis Business Journal Michael Sheffield Senior Staff writerMemphis Business Journal MentorMe founder Brit Fitzpatrick continues to see her company grow two years after… more DEMARCUS BOWSER R It may have taken a little longer than expected, but MentorMe is on a hot streak that includes stints in accelerator programs in San Francisco and Atlanta and the creation of partnerships with several schools and companies in between. The company, which graduated from the Seed Hatchery accelerator in 2013, has a formal contract with the Memphis Grizzlies Foundation that will put 10 of the organization’s funded programs on its platform, and work with the Knoxville and Greater Memphis Chambers of Commerce. The company is also working with The Mentoring Project in Oklahoma City and Portland, Oregon. MentorMe founder Brit Fitzpatrick continues to see her company grow two years after… more DEMARCUS BOWSER R Brit Fitzpatrick , CEO of MentorMe, a cloud-based platform that matches mentors and proteges, said she has come a long way from having to explain the company wasn’t a mentoring program or a simple match service. “Now, we have customers who talk on our behalf and we can provide overall value, data management, tracking and engagement,” Fitzpatrick said. “It’s a much more built-out platform, and that has given us a mass appeal to different industries.” Fitzpatrick says the process has taken longer than she expected, but because it was her first venture, she knew it wasn’t going to be quick and easy. “I was somewhat fortunate because what makes us unique is the technology is an add-on to my passion for mentoring,” she said. “I developed the process and layered the technology on top of it. I didn’t invent mentoring or programs, but we developed something that made it easier for them to scale.” MentorMe has around 3,000 users who range from baby boomers to millennials, and those users were able to be reached because the platform is accessible but also provides technology that simplifies the mentor-matching process. However, because the company has seen so much growth since graduating from the accelerator, Fitzpatrick said she hasn’t had many opportunities to officially work with companies that have followed MentorMe into the programs. “It’s been really difficult to balance growing my own business with working with the newer companies,” she said. “Lift as you climb only works if you’re climbing. I’m trying to build the best company possible and then bring people into those spaces.” Michael Sheffield covers bioscience and biotechnology; manufacturing; tourism and hospitality; and sports business.
