By the way, why is Meetic called Meetic?

Apr 10, 2022

April 9, 2022 Do you think Meetic is a reference to the word “mythical”? Or is it a portmanteau with the acronym TIC? It is more complicated than that. We told you why Tinder is called Tinder in 2019. Then in 2020, why Bumble is called Bumble. For 2022, we’re continuing this series of tech names dedicated to dating apps with one of the most well-known — and oldest — services still in operation: Meetic. Because there is also a little story behind the name of Meetic. Launched in November 2001 by Marc Simoncini, Meetic quickly established itself as one of the key players in the dating online — no doubt you come across his radio commercials or TV clips from time to time. In 2005, the platform went public and, six years later, it ended up falling into the hands of the American giant Match.com. Meetic could have been called Soon But before being called Meetic, Meetic was almost called… Soon (“Soon”, in English). This was revealed by Marc Simoncini during an exchange with the Internet Journal in 2007 : ” Initially Meetic was to be called Soon “. But this track ended up being discarded. It was an agency, Daesk, that ended up coming up with the idea for the name Meetic. However, Soon had had the favors of the founder, as recalled in 2006 the site eCommerceMag . Soon was on the final “short list” because the name was perceived as ” very feminine, very pretty, very round “, while Meetic sounded more curtly: “ A bit ‘ic’ technical, not great “, he said. This gives a bit of a clack effect, like computer, digital or programmatic. The story goes that it was in the last hours before the official launch of the service that the choice of name ended up being stopped by Marc Simoncini. It will be Meetic. Too bad for Soon. And obviously that hasn’t hurt the success of the platform, given its longevity and audience, which numbers in the millions every month. Source: Meetic There remains a question: why Meetic won the bet? You may have come across guesses about the meaning of the name: a pun on “mythical” (or “mythic”), because your story will be great, epic, enduring. A portmanteau between “Meet” (“meeting” in English) and “ICT” (acronym for Information and Communication Technologies), to show the role of digital technology in romantic encounters. In fact, the motivation is clearly drawn from the wish not to suggest that the meeting, love at first sight, must wait, will happen, is on the way, as “Soon” suggested. In 2007, the Internet Journal draws an explanation from the work entitled Extraordinary little stories of entrepreneurspublished the same year by the Presses Universitaires de France. « Soon means soon, or a deferred promise. But the meeting does not wait. And the dream of any encounter is that it be mythical, that it be at the origin of a new story as myths are at the origin of the birth of the world. The company will therefore not be called Soon but Meetic. Let’s meet hic et nunc, here and now. » Because in Latin, the phrase hic et nunc means “immediately, without delay”. Clearly, the encounter must be mythical and immediate.
