I’ve been researching service continuity for patients in Healthcare organizations recently. I ran across a company, Marathon Technologies , who focuses on fault tolerance in IT infrastructures and I found it interesting that they were targeting tools necessary to provide care for patients. I invited Mr. Joost Verhofstad, Director of Healthcare Solutions at Marathon, to talk a bit about what they do and how they safeguard critical patient information. I requested that he help prescribe preventative high availability solutions to ensure that unplanned system failures never come between patients and their healthcare needs. What is the single most reason given by Healthcare IT Administrators for improving IT infrastructure? Without question, Patient Care tops every list, followed closely by federal regulations and costs. With the rise in government mandated regulations such as HIPAA, identifying ways to encourage widespread use of electronic data interchange has resulted in a surge of activity within healthcare organizations from hospitals to pharmaceutical organizations looking for ways to streamline processes that improve patient care and reduce risk. In today’s world, it is imperative that no patient ever has to wait to receive care; especially not as a result of paperwork or technology issues. As Healthcare organizations adopt new technology to improve their efficiency, their dependence on that technology increases exponentially. Today, third party vendors handle physician paging and delivery of alert codes. Government Agencies provide call center and online assistance to potential patients in need of care. Pharmaceutical companies track critical drugs. All of these tasks are handled by an intricately designed IT Infrastructure. However, what happens to all of these critical applications if a failure were to occur? What about the integrity of the caregiver’s data in the event of a disaster? If the IT Team implemented a high availability solution, then downtime (planned or unplanned) won’t be an issue for the patients who depend on these services. In the event of a disaster, critical patient information, including insurance information, can be accessed from alternative locations. A well planned “high availability” approach can protect critical applications and data from unplanned events ensuring service continuity to patient. When considering an upgrade to a current healthcare IT infrastructure, many organizations will utilize complicated and complex systems like clusters which require increased staff and enormous cost while increasing failure points. In contrast, there are software solutions currently on the market that provide the highest reliability for Healthcare IT systems and maintain availability with limited administration and installation costs. With so many different approaches to achieving “availability,” understanding not only what is best for your hospital or organization, but the solutions your partners and vendors utilize will ensure that every patient receives exceptional care when they need it. Integrating “high availability” should be at the top of organization’s list of requirements for “Improving Patient Care”.

In a move to expand its scope of providing high availability (HA) and fault tolerant systems, Stratus Technologies has acquired privately held Marathon Technologies, an application availability software provider based in Littleton, Massachusetts. "The acquisition of Marathon is totally synergistic. With the combination of Marathon's offerings with our offerings, we are the one stop shop for availability," said David Laurello, Stratus chairman and CEO. "In addition, it expands our channel base, or partner ecosystem and gives us a much more diverse customer base. "
Marathon Technologies focused on selling software to ensure fault tolerant system operations. Its flagship product, the Marathon EverRun MX, offers a software based approach to ensuring Microsoft applications could run without interruption on multicore and multiprocessor computers. With this purchase, Stratus is further expanding its portfolio of HA and fault-tolerant systems. HA systems are critical for ensuring operations run even if an individual server stops operating. Such HA services are good for mission-critical operations, business continuity and disaster recovery. Stratus originated as a provider of HA servers, which are now sold under the name ftServer. Subsequently, Stratus released HA software called Avance for small and medium-sized businesses that run commodity hardware. The purchase of Marathon will allow Stratus to offer a more sophisticated fault-tolerant software package with EverRun MX. Unlike Avance, EverRun can offer true fault tolerance, namely the ability to switch to a backup copy of a program without losing any in-transit data. The software also has additional business continuity, disaster recovery and reporting features not found in Avance. EverRun "is a little bit above our Avance HA offering but a little bit below our ftServer offering," Laurello said. Over time, Stratus will combine the best features of both Avance and everRun MX into a yet-to-be-named software package. The technologies will also help Stratus as it prepares packages for running HA and mission critical workloads in private clouds and other virtualized environments. Stratus will also benefit from Marathon's partner network and customer base, Laurello said. Marathon partners include Microsoft and Citrix Systems. In terms of customers, Marathon made significant inroads into serving vertical market segments such as security, airline baggage logistics, home and corporate security, and manufacturing. "There is very little overlap," Laurello said, noting that Stratus itself was strong in financial services, public safety and manufacturing. The approximately 40 employees of Marathon, located in the U.S., U.K., and Japan, will be offered employment with Stratus. Stratus Technologies is based in Maynard, Massachusetts and is a wholly owned subsidiary of Stratus Technologies Bermuda Holdings. Marathon Technologies offers continuous availability software for Windows servers. Marathon keeps security systems running including access control, video monitoring systems, and others, in a large number of airports, universities, hospitals, government facilities and enterprises, worldwide. In September 2012, Marathon Technologies was acquired by Stratus Technologies. The valuation of Marathon Technologies was undisclosed. Other terms of the deal were not released.
