Mapillary consists of a smartphone app, a website, and an API. With the app, users can take street-level photos of roads, bike paths, buildings, and other areas relevant for mapping. These photos are uploaded to Mapillarys servers where they are processed and then put on a map. The photos are also accessible through an API for developers, app makers, and mapping services to use. The company uses computer vision on the server-side to connect and stitch photos uploaded over time and builds a photo representation that grows in detail over time. On June 18th, 2020, Mapillary was acquired by Facebook. The terms of the transaction were not disclosed.
