The illustrator Oriol Malet pays homage to art brut in comic and essay format

Sep 29, 2022

September 29, 2022 Presentation of ‘A world of Brut Art’, by Oriol Malet The Martorell illustrator Oriol Malet presented this Thursday at the Library A world of Art Brut . It is a comic book and essay at the same time, with own artistic creations that aims to highlight people who have created art without receiving previous academic training, inspired by their life circumstances. The work has been done together with the French gallerist Christian Berst. The presentation was part of the events of the urban art festival IntARTvenció and was carried out by Toni Vicent, also an illustrator from Martorell. They were accompanied by the Councilor for Culture, Andreu González. But A world of Art Brut has already had a previous tour, it was presented for the first time in October 2021 at The Bridge Art Gallery in Paris, accompanied by a sample of Malet’s original works related to the contents of the book . Al mes següent ja van sorgir les edicions en català (de la mà de Comanegra i ja en segona edició) i castellà (Norma Comics). Malet explains that the concept of Art Brut “is very well known in France but not so much here” and clarifies that “the concept refers to a diamond in the rough, as it alludes to those people who start to produce art but who it is outside the circuits, who may have never painted or who have no artistic training, but who suddenly feel an irrepressible and vital need to create”. Presentation of “A world of Brut Art”, by Oriol Malet Malet has been involved in all the processes involved in the preparation of the book, from the research, the script and the illustrations, but highlights the role of Christian Berst, who is a French collector and gallerist, great connoisseur of the ‘Art Brut, and that has opened the doors for me to contact the relatives of the artists we have talked about’. Oriol Malet A world of Art Brut proposes to “show what these artists do with their art. But in a special way, following a stylistic mimicry that means that I end up drawing those plains in the style of the artist I’m talking about”. For this reason, he defines the work as a project “as ambitious as it is experimental”. At the same time, he believes that the content seduced the editor “because it captures a lot the changes in the styles of the people we are talking about”. Some stylistic changes that the artist also applies to his production: “I’m very restless and I get bored always drawing in the same way”, he emphasizes. He adds that he is currently working with John Carlin on a new project that talks about and teaches “how and why power rots the ideals of people who are initially loaded with reasons, which is a bit of a tribute to George Orwell and that based on the political process of Nicaragua and Sandinismo”. Oriol Malet, il·lustrador In addition, he is editor-in-chief of a comic book collection by Comanegra Publishing and continues to be very focused on double-page newspaper-style comics in La Vanguardia.
