EV Charging Reinvented – German Start-up Magment is Electrifying Roads & Pavements For Wireless Charging

The Germany start-up Magment has created magnetic concrete that can be used for wireless electric vehicle charging. Auto Futures has been talking to Mauricio Esguerra, Magment’s Co-Founder and CEO, about the technology and the commercial roll-out plans. Esguerra is a physicist and an expert in magnetics. “The founders developed and patented the magnetic concrete technology at Siemens as experts in materials and magnetics. By the Inventor Protection Law, the patent was released and the company started in 2015 with the vision and mission of dynamic wireless charging. Strong support by the largest cement groups has been definitive in scaling up and getting ready for this new market,” says Esguerra. The technology makes it possible to charge electric vehicles while moving, electric scooters whist they are docked and logistic vehicles whilst they are working. “Conventional static wireless charging solutions use ceramic ferrite tiles under the transmitter coil. They are brittle not fit for road applications and have limitations in size and cost. Our technology uses ferrite scrap as concrete aggregates removing these shortcomings and enabling dynamic wireless charging. By virtue of embedding the coils in the magnetic concrete coils, the transmission efficiency is raised up to 96%.”   “Wireless charging is fully automated and a seamless experience for the driver. There’s no need to actively intervene in the interaction between vehicle and grid,” adds Esguerra. For e-scooters, charging is possible in stations where they are parked. This can lead to increased vehicle availability and less street clutter. “Scooters or other micro-mobility vehicles are charged on a stationary MagDock charging station. This is a monolithic device containing the electronics and communication devices apt for street use: maintenance-free and vandalism/proof,” he explains. “This project is a real step forward towards the future of dynamic wireless charging.” The world’s first wireless charging concrete highway is going to be built in Indiana, with the help of Magment. The Road Electrification Project, together with the Indiana Department of Transportation (INDOT) and Purdue University, was announced by Indiana’s Governor, Eric J. Holcomb, in June, 2021. “Indiana is known as the Crossroads of America and we’re committed to fortifying our position as a transportation leader by innovating to support the emerging vehicle technology,” states Governor Eric J. Holcomb. “This partnership to develop wireless charging technology for highways sends a strong signal that Indiana is on the leading edge of delivering the infrastructure needed to support the adoption of electric vehicles.”   “This is the first and prime project in the U.S. looking at validating magnetic concrete technology, MagRoad, for high duty vehicles under tough environmental conditions. In strong partnership with the experts from Purdue, America‘s largest engineering school, and INDOT, these are privileged conditions for a successful rollout and the basis for its future use within the sustains infrastructure plan,” says Esguerra. “This project is a real step forward towards the future of dynamic wireless charging that will undoubtedly set the standard for affordable, sustainable, and efficient transportation electrification,” he adds.
