Control and safety technology to help ensure safe and efficient operation of Culzean development in North Sea
AUSTIN, Texas (March 14, 2016) - Emerson Process Management, a global business of Emerson (NYSE: EMR), has been awarded a contract to automate the Maersk Oil Culzean gas field development in the North Sea. One of the largest gas discoveries in the area, the Culzean field is expected to meet around five percent of the UK's total demand. Maersk and its co-venturers are investing around $4.5 billion in the Culzean development. Three offshore platforms will support 12-slot wellheads and house a central processing facility, control room and living quarters. As the main automation contractor, Emerson will provide automation services and technologies for the three offshore platforms as well as for an onshore observation facility that can support remote operations if needed. "Emerson has proven technology and a successful track record of managing budget and schedule risk in North Sea automation projects," said Steve Sonnenberg, president of Emerson Process Management. Emerson Electric : technology and expertise to support Maersk Oil's Culzean project

Maersk Supply Service said it slashed 38.95 million tonnes of CO2 emissions during a trial programme on board a 2009-built offshore tug supply vessel. The trial, conducted in partnership with The Ocean Cleanup, saw blended biofuel used to reduce CO2 emissions during Maersk Tender’s recent charter in the Pacific. “At The Ocean Cleanup, we aim to have carbon-neutral operations, but we realise there is still some work to do to get there,” said The Ocean Cleanup ocean director Henk van Dalen. “This is why we’re pleased to see and be a part of Maersk’s efforts to test and transition to alternative fuel options. Maersk has been vital in our work to clean the oceans, and we look forward to continuing our collaboration while having a more positive impact on the environment.”
Maersk Supply Service and The Ocean Cleanup partnered to purchase 90 million tonnes of hydrotreated vegetable oil (HVO) biofuel from Maersk Oil Trading. During the trial, Maersk Tender was operated on a blend of 15% HVO and 85% low sulphur marine gasoil (MGO). At this rate and with current fuel efficiency, the HVO was able to cover two separate six-week trips, with a total saving of 38.95M tonnes of CO2. Maersk Supply Service managing director for Canada Chris Tibbo said:, “For now, it is very much a test, as biofuel is still an expensive alternative to standard marine gasoil. Still, it has given us valuable insight into how this can reduce our emissions further.”

More than 70% of the imports that reach the United States come by ship and enter the country through its ports. One of the largest shipping companies in the world – A.P. Moller – Maersk – carries a share of those imported goods. According to the company website, “A.P. Moller – Maersk is an integrated transport and logistics company with multiple brands and is a global leader in container shipping and ports. The company employs roughly 76,000 employees across operations in 130 countries.”
It is a huge company with a global reach. But like most global companies, it didn’t start that way. This edition of FreightWaves Classics provides an overview of the company’s history. Early in the last century (April 16, 1904 to be exact), Dampskibsselskabet Svendborg (The Steamship Company Svendborg) was established in Svendborg, Denmark. This company eventually became what is known now as A. P. Moller – Maersk. The company was founded by A.P. Møller and his father, Peter Mærsk Møller. With some difficulty, the father-son team were able to raise enough money and purchased a used steamer in October 1904. The Møllers renamed the ship SVENDBORG after their hometown. The younger Møller wanted to expand more quickly than the company’s board members felt was prudent. Therefore, when he had the opportunity in 1912, A.P. Møller founded another steamship company (Dampskibsselskabet af 1912). World War I provided opportunities for shipping companies, and Møller’s new enterprise was able to expand rapidly. Interestingly, both steamship companies were managed together for decades, when they were merged under one name in 2003 – A.P. Moller – Maersk. Møller had other ideas as well; he wanted to open a shipyard and combine the company’s shipping experience with shipbuilding. He did so in 1918, opening the Odense Steel Shipyard on the island of Funen. Over the decades, the shipyard was a key company supplier, particularly after the initial container ship was delivered in 1980. However, the company’s leadership decided to close the Odense Steel Shipyard in 2009 because of increased competition. The last vessel built in the shipyard was delivered in 2012. The company’s first regular liner service began in 1928 with monthly sailings. Maersk Line was chosen as the name of the new service, which changed the company’s focus from the spot market. In maritime shipping, participating in the spot market means that a ship agrees to carry cargo to a specific port or ports and does not keep a regular schedule or call on the same ports from voyage to voyage. The first Maersk Line service left from the Port of Baltimore, traversed the Panama Canal, and then made calls on U.S. West Coast ports and Asian ports. The U.S. to the Far East liner service was Maersk Line’s only service until 1947, when the company established additional routes. World War II in Europe began on September 1, 1939 when Germany invaded Poland. A few months later, Germany began its occupation of Denmark on April 9, 1940. On the night of April 8, A.P. Møller and his son, Mærsk Mc-Kinney Møller, sent messages to each of the company’s  ships that were outside Danish territory to steer for neutral ports – as well as to disregard any further orders from occupied Denmark. Of the company’s fleet of 46 ships, 36 were requisitioned and utilized in the war effort. The war was costly; 150 seamen and 25 ships were lost. The Maersk logo features a white seven-pointed star on a light blue background. The REGINA MÆRSK was a new ship built by the Odense Steel Shipyard in 1955. It was also the first Maersk vessel to have its hull painted with the same light blue color. Within a few years all Maersk ships were using that color scheme. A.P. Møller and the Svendborg and 1912 steamship companies were granted a 50-year concession to explore and extract raw materials from Denmark and its offshore holdings in 1962. This began A.P. Moller – Maersk’s entry in the oil and gas industry, as well as its off-shore services business. That same year, a joint venture among the company and oil giants Shell and Gulf began. Named the Danish Underground Consortium (DUC), the joint venture benefited A.P. Moller, who had no prior experience in oil and gas exploration/extraction. The DUC extracted oil from the North Sea for the first time in 1972. By 1974 Maersk Oil had developed enough experience to share the management of the efforts. A.P. Møller died at the age of 88 in June 1965. When he died, the fleet that he had built comprised 88 ships – almost 50% of the total merchant fleet of Denmark. His son, Mærsk McKinney Møller, took over the management of the company. In 1967 another part of the business began – Maersk Supply Service. This occurred when two supply ships to serve the company’s oil rig  were delivered. Seven years later (1974), Maersk Supply Service was established as an independent business within the A.P. Shipping and global trade changed forever when Malcom McLean developed standardized cargo containers. Maersk was not the first shipping line to embrace containerization. However, Maersk ordered nine container ships in 1975 and began containerized shipping on its original route. Containerization continued to grow, and to maximize cargo capacity, consolidation and utilization, Maersk started Mercantile, a freight forwarding business, in 1977. A.P. Moller – Maersk continued its expansion into affiliated maritime businesses in 1979, when it acquired Svitzer. A company that was almost 150 years old at the time it was acquired, Svitzer focused on specialized marine services such as “harbor, coastal, terminal/LNG, offshore and ocean towage as well as salvage operations, crew-boat and emergency-response services.”

As noted above, the standardized shipping container revolutionized multiple shipping modes. Having dealt with containers for more than 15 years, the company began Mærsk Container Industry, or MCI, in 1991. MCI was founded to develop improvements and manufacture shipping containers. Its first manufacturing facility opened in Denmark. Within a few years, MCI was manufacturing not only dry containers, but refrigerated containers as well. The company built container manufacturing facilities in China. The first opened in 1998; the second in 2004. Now the company only manufactures refrigerated containers at a plant in Qingdao, China. A.P. Moller – Maersk’s growth continued in 1993 when it acquired the liner business of EACBen Container Line Ltd. from Danish East Asiatic Company. With this acquisition Maersk Line became the largest container shipping company in the world. In 1999, the company acquired Sea-Land. This had been the company that Malcom McLean had led, and that changed the shipping of freight around the world. For more than 15 years the company had been investing in shipping terminals in strategic locations, and the Sea-Land acquisition increased its terminal portfolio. Almost a century after the original steamship company was founded in 1904, the first two companies in this now-huge company – the steamship companies – and all their partnerships and subsidiaries merged under the name A.P. Møller – Mærsk A/S in 2003. In 1995, a merger of the British container shipping company P&O and the Dutch container shipping company Nedlloyd created P&O Nedlloyd. In 2005, A.P. Møller – Mærsk’s acquisitions/ industry consolidations continued when it purchased P&O Nedlloyd. In addition, as the integration was in process, the company also changed the Maersk-Sealand brand back to Maersk Line (as it had been prior to 2000). On its website A.P. Møller – Mærsk admits that the “integration of one large, global organization into another large, global organization proved difficult, but eventually provided Maersk Line with a scale that would not have been possible through organic growth.” The company, which had been an industry leader for decades, truly became a global leader as it expanded and absorbed and integrated its many parts. Prior to its closing a few years later, the Odense Steel Shipyard continued to build bigger and more advanced ships. In 2006 (for the third time in 10 years), it built the largest container vessel in the world. Named the EMMA MÆRSK, this ship was capable of carrying more than 15,000 twenty-foot containers. Just over 30 years earlier, the first Maersk container ship, the ADRIAN MÆRSK, had left Newark with 385 containers. Moreover, the company took ownership of seven more ships that were the same size as the EMMA MÆRSK. A few years later, in 2013, Maersk took delivery of the first Triple-E ultra-large container ship, which was even larger than the EMMA MÆRSK and its sister ships. When it was delivered, the MÆRSK MC-KINNEY MØLLER was the largest ship in the world. It measured over 1,312 feet long and could carry 18,000+ twenty-foot containers. A.P. Møller – Mærsk began combining its various logistics-related brands in 1999. The Sea-Land acquisition that year came with a number of container terminals and logistics providers. As noted above, the company had started Mercantile in 1977, and integrated it and the Sea-Land logistics functions under the Maersk Logistics brand in early 2000. The 2005 P&O Nedlloyd acquisition included that company’s forwarding business (Damco Sea & Air, which had been founded a century earlier as C.W.H van Dam & Co.). In 2009 A.P. In late April 2015, the company opened APM Terminals Maasvlakte II container terminal in Rotterdam, Netherlands. When it opened it was the most technologically advanced, automated and sustainable container terminal in the world. It was the world’s first terminal to generate zero carbon emissions because it is powered by electricity generated by wind turbines. Near the end of the third quarter of 2016 A.P. Møller – Mærsk announced that its management had made the strategic decision to reorganize the company, moving from a conglomerate of related companies to an integrated company focused on the transportation and logistics of containers. As part of that decision, it meant that A.P. Moller – Maersk would divest its oil and natural gas-related businesses. A year later (September 2017), the company agreed to sell its shares in Maersk Tankers to APMH Invest, a wholly owned subsidiary of A.P. Maersk Tankers had been part of the company since 1928. A.P. Møller had ordered five oil tankers in 1927, and they became the first ships in the Maersk Tankers fleet a year later. That part of the company grew over time, and transporting crude oil was its primary business interest for 25 years (1950-1975). As noted above, A.P. Moller – Maersk’s involvement in the oil and natural gas industry began when the company was granted the exploration/extraction concession from the Danish government in 1962. Its involvement ended in April 2019, when the company began “the separation and demerger of Maersk Drilling and its activities. Subsequently Maersk Drilling became a separately listed company on Nasdaq Copenhagen.” The company had founded Maersk Drilling in 1972 to own/operate rigs for oil exploration companies. The company’s latest acquisition (to date) took place in December 2017, when Maersk Line acquired what was then the world’s seventh-largest container shipping line, Germany’s Hamburg Süd. After learning more about A.P. Moller – Maersk, it seems clear that the company will continue to innovate and grow to meet the demands of the marketplace. It is a global leader in transportation and logistics, and that leadership will be needed to meet the challenges that are sure to arise in the years to come. Tags

Tyra – Denmark’s largest gas and condensate field and main gas processing hub – was, a few years ago, on the verge of being decommissioned, which would have, according to report back then, wiped thousands of jobs. The field located 225km west of Esbjerg, consisting of two main centers Tyra East and Tyra West and five satellite platforms, had been in production since 1984, and the offshore facilities were approaching end of life, and the seabed subsidence had threatened the integrity of the sinking platforms, too. Maersk Oil, the then operator, had spent millions of dollars reinforcing the Tyra structures over the years. However, it in January 2017, said the facilities were no longer safe for work, having sunk five meters deep over the years, and warned it would shut down the field for good on October 1, 2018, shoud no viable economic solution for the development of the field be found. The shutdown would have meant not just the end for Tyra, but also for the satellite fields and would have discouraged future drilling attempts nearby, leaving potentially discoverable resources stranded below the seabed. Luckily, just a few months after the shutdown warning, an agreement was reached with the Danish government, paving the way for a full redevelopment plan and life extension for the Tyra project, as well as setting the ground for future exploration nearby. Maersk Oil operated the field at the time, on behalf the Danish Underground Consortium, with other partners being Shell, Chevron, and the state-owned Nordsøfonden. The full redevelopment of the field was approved by the DUC partners in December 2017, calling for partial removal of old infrastructure and installation of new jackets and topsides. More specifically, the redevelopment calls for removal and decommissioning of the prior Tyra platforms, reuse, and 10-13 meters extension of the current jackets at six platforms that will have new topsides and a totally new process platform and a new accommodation platform. So, Where are we now? Fast forward to 2020. The DUC consortium membership has changed so much that the only company that was there in 2017 when the agreement for the redevelopment was reached is Nordsøfonden. Maersk Oil was bought from Maersk by France’s Total in a deal estimated at $7.45 billion, struck in 2017 and completed in March 2018. In September of the same year, the French oil major bought out Chevron’s Danish business, increasing its operatorship in the DUC from 31.2% to 43.2%. In October 2018, Shell agreed to sell its Danish upstream business to Norwegian Energy Company (Noreco) in a deal valuing Shell’s assets at around $1.9 billion. Noreco’s Chairman Riulf Rustad told Reuters at the time that the two companies had been negotiating the deal since January 2017, the month when Maersk warned about the potential shutdown. No, Really ... Where are we now? OK, the previous passage was still talking about a relatively distant past as compared to “now.”
Now, in 2020, the Tyra site has been a busy one, and we know this thanks to Noreco, which has become an unofficial PR for the project this year, regularly sharing updates on the redevelopment milestones. The summer saw the Dutch heavy-lifting expertise and technology –  humongous vessels owned by Heerema Marine Contracts and Allseas – in action. Heerema Marine Contractors had won the contracts for heavy-lifting work on the Tyra redevelopment with the Sleipnir semi-submersible crane vessel back in 2017, while the giant crane ship was still under construction in Singapore. The scope awarded to HMC under two contracts included offshore lifting services in the Tyra East and West complexes related to the replacement of the wellhead and riser platform topsides, as well as the transportation and installation contract for the processing & accommodation platform. The Sleipnir, named after Odin’s eight-legged stallion as it has four vertical columns on each side of the vessel, was delivered in 2019, embarking upon a globetrotting tour, first working in the Mediterranean Sea, then in Trinidad, before arriving to the North Sea with a packed calendar. The LNG-powered semi-submersible crane vessel, equipped with a pair of revolving cranes that can lift 20,000 tonnes in tandem, in July 2020 completed the first phase of the Tyra decommissioning when the topsides, including wellhead and riser platforms, were removed. The second phase of the decommissioning campaign consisted of two main lifts of the two integrated accommodation and processing platforms at Tyra East and Tyra West. Allseas’ giant catamaran Pioneering Spirit was employed for this part of the campaign, removing both topsides in single lifts. The 14,000 tonne TEA topsides and 7,800 tonne TWA topsides were removed with the vessel’s motion-compensated topsides lift system. For the smaller, lighter structures, the vessel’s new aft-mounted 5000 t crane was deployed. The two topsides will be dismantled at the recycling yard M.A.R.S. in Frederikshavn, and more than 95 percent of the old platforms are expected to be recycled. “The recycling of old Tyra is to date the largest offshore recycling project carried out in Denmark, “Noreco said in August. The Pioneering Spirit is not done with decom work yet, as the vessel will return to the field in 2021 and 2022, to remove the TWA jacket in 2021 and the TEA jacket in 2022. The removed topsides will be replaced by one new processing platform and one new accommodation platform. The four wellhead platforms and two riser platforms will have their jackets extended by 10-13 meters. The part with jackets brings us back to the eight-legged stallion, the Sleipnir, but unlike the previous trip that was all about decommissioning, this one is about installation. Namely, the Sleipnir in September returned to the Tyra location, where it then installed two new Dragados Offshore-built jackets, which form the foundation for the new Tyra process and accommodation platforms. The two jackets were the first new jacket structures delivered and installed for the Tyra redevelopment project. Commenting on the installation of the jackets, David B. Cook, who became CEO of Noreco in July 2020, said: “The delivery and installation of these jackets is an important achievement for the project and a true testament to our ability to consistently deliver in-line with expectations, in both a safe and predictable manner. The milestone marks a clear shift for the Tyra Redevelopment project, moving our focus onto completing the new modules. Each milestone moves us toward a state-of-the-art facility in the North Sea. “The Tyra Redevelopment will not only improve safety and increase Noreco’s production as well as operational efficiency, but also at the same time lower CO2 emissions and unit costs,” Cook said. According to info on Noreco’s website, the use of new technology and modernized working processes will see Tyra’s operating efficiency increase, and at the same time reduce CO2 intensity. Total expects that the redeveloped Tyra will reduce 30% of CO2 emissions, 90% of flaring, and improve overall operational energy efficiency. What’s Next? With the installation of new jackets, the new phase – the installation phase – started for Tyra. The next milestones are for the new topside modules currently being built to be delivered from the yards and transported to the Danish Continental Shelf for installation. The wellhead and riser modules are currently being built in Singapore, the accommodation module in Italy and the processing module in Indonesia. The topsides are expected to sail away in 2021 and are slated for the installation at the Tyra in the same year, ahead of the first gas in 2022. Once online, the redeveloped Tyra will produce enough gas to power 1.5 million homes in Denmark, with production at peak expected at 60000 boepd. Allseas Removing Topsides at Tyra. Credit Allseas

Brownfield Development – Tyra pieces falling into place

Singapore’s offshore rig builder Sembcorp Marine has clinched two offshore platform contracts worth over S$550 million ($405M) that support redevelopment efforts at the Al Shaheen and Tyra fields, located in Qatari waters and the Danish North Sea, respectively. Tyra field; Source: Maersk Oil
Sembcorp Marine said on Monday it would team up with North Oil Company (NOC) to fabricate two wellhead platforms for the NOC-operated Al Shaheen oil field, which would be bridge-linked to the field’s existing facilities. Awarded under NOC’s Gallaf Batch 2 Project, the contract covers engineering, procurement, construction, installation, commissioning and offshore brownfield integration of the platforms, to be started-up at Al Shaheen by December 2021. The Gallaf Project is a multi-phase development for maintaining Al Shaheen’s production capacity at a plateau of 300,000 barrels of oil per day (bopd). Situated 80km north of Ras Laffan, Al Shaheen has one of the world’s biggest oil reserves. It is the largest oil field in Qatar, contributing to 45% of the country’s oil production. Separately, Sembcorp Marine as a subcontractor will fabricate certain platforms and bridges for Total in the Tyra Redevelopment Project. To be ready in the first quarter of 2021, the platforms will, in part, replace ageing facilities and sustain daily outputs of 60,000 barrels of oil equivalent (BOE) at the Tyra field over the next 25 years. Tyra is the largest gas condensate field in the Danish sector of the North Sea. Post-redevelopment, it will produce enough gas to power 1.5 million homes in Denmark. “Sembcorp Marine’s successful bids in the Gallaf Batch 2 and Tyra projects reinforce our engineering expertise in catering to different geographies and operating environments,” Sembcorp Marine Head of Offshore Platforms Samuel Wong said.
