City approves contract for installation of free Wi-Fi downtown By ( contact ) Wednesday, July 24, 2013 | 12:01 p.m. A free Wi-Fi network downtown is closer to reality after action today by the Las Vegas City Council. At its meeting this morning, the council approved a contract to allow LV.Net to install equipment on public right of way to create a network for free Wi-Fi in open areas downtown. Under terms of the contract, there will be no cost to the city or users for the service. The initial phase of the Wi-Fi is designed for laptop, tablet and iPad users and will be focused within an area stretching east from Grand Central Parkway to Eighth Street and north from Charleston Boulevard to Bonanza Avenue. Plans are to expand coverage areas and eventually make improvements for smartphone users, city officials said. The Wi-Fi will offer speeds of 1mb download and 500k upload. Officials said the system would use standard filtering methods to ensure security of the Wi-Fi network and would not collect personal information. , 89101
