eliminated Juan Soto of The Dominican Republic hits a home run in the third inning of the World Baseball Classic Pool D game against Puerto Rico at loanDepot park on March 15, 2023 in Miami, Florida. Manny Machado, too. It wasn’t enough for a star-studded Dominican Republic team to advance to the World Baseball Classic’s quarterfinals. Soto homered for the second time in four games, but Puerto Rico scored early and held off the Dominican Republic in a 5-2 win in Miami in a win-or-go-home finale. Advertisement Machado went 0-for-4 on Wednesday and was 4-for-17 in the tournament, but he matched Soto with two homers. Soto was 6-for-15 with three doubles, two homers, three RBIs and six runs scored. He was 1-for-2 with two walks and the homer on Wednesday. Designated hitter Nelson Cruz did not appear in the finale, nor did reliever Luis Garcίa, who allowed a run over 2 1/3 innings over his two World Baseball Classic appearances. All four will head back to Padres camp, joining Xander Bogaerts and Ha-Seong Kim after the Netherlands and Korea, respectively, also were eliminated in pool play. Nabil Crismatt is also eon his way back to Peoria, Ariz., after losing to Team USA on Wednesday. That leaves only Yu Darvish (Japan), Nick Martinez (Team USA) and minor leaguers Brett Sullivan (Italy) and Jarryd Dale (Australia) as the Padres’ remaining representatives in the World Baseball Classic.
