WA government makes renewable hydrogen target announcement
The Western Australian government has said it will investigate implementation of a Renewable Hydrogen Target. According to a statement made on Friday, the approach would set targets for retailers in the South West Interconnected System (WA’s main electricity grid) to procure a certain percentage of electricity fuelled by renewable hydrogen, creating a local market which would support emerging hydrogen projects and improve grid stability. It has claimed influences from “elements of the Commonwealth Government’s Renewable Energy Target” which has been in operation since 2001. “A Renewable Hydrogen Target may also prepare Western Australia to transition from natural gas electricity turbines to hydrogen turbines to stabilise our electricity grid,” said energy minister Bill Johnston. ePAC launches new Australian print on demand facility
ePac Flexible Packaging (ePac) has opened its first Australian manufacturing facility in Coburg, Melbourne with a tour by guests and local dignitaries (pictured). The $10 million facility incorporates an order-to-demand model, utilising a powerful HP Indigo 20000 printer and featuring two pouch production lines. The company said on-demand production and low minimums mean that packaging can be shipped in 10-15 business days. ePac said the new plant was a response to rising demand for locally manufactured flexible packaging, and the needs of small innovative businesses bringing product to market rapidly. Microbiology diagnostic device manufacturer LBT Innovations has sold one of its APAS Independence analysis units to the Albany Medical Centre in New York. The APAS Independence technology uses AI and an algorithm to detect bacterial colonies, hastening the time required to detect infections in samples from patients. The sale, which follows a six-week evaluation-to-buy trial at Albany’s laboratory, will include LBT’s recently developed urine analysis capability. The laboratory is part of a health system serving four hospitals, which generate seven million tests a year. Fonterra in seaweed cattle feed trials
Dairy manufacturer Fonterra is continuing trials with Sea Forrest to test the seaweed Asparagopsis as a feed additive for its potential for reducing methane emissions from dairy herds. CSIRO has shown that Asparagopsis can cut emissions of the harmful gas by 80 per cent in laboratory conditions. However real-world emission reductions may vary. 900 dairy cows have been fed the seaweed as a small part of their diet over the past two years, in trials at an Australian farm. LBT Innovations receives APAS instrument orders
Laboratory device manufacturer LBT Innovations has received an order for multiple APAS instruments from its US distributor Remel Inc, a division of Thermo Fisher Scientific. The company has been commercialising its APAS Independence laboratory instrument, an imaging, interpretation, sorting and reporting machine that automatically examines culture plates for the presence of bacterial colonies. LBT said the order was expected to accelerate early sales opportunities in the US and would support the placement of instruments in key sector opinion leaders. Graphene manufacturer First Graphene has inked a distribution deal to supply South Africa’s Nanoproof Glade Chemical Manufacturers JV with graphene for the construction market. The company will supply its PureGRAPH graphene for multiple used including as an admixture for concrete, grouts and mortars. Nanoproof will purchase a minimum of five tonnes of PureGRAPH Aqua over a four year period, valued at up to $285,000 a year. The addition of graphene reduces CO2 emissions by 25 per cent by reducing the amount of cement used in a concrete mix. Anagenics progresses restructure
Health and beauty business Anagenics is progressing the restructure of its businesses following the purchase of BLC Cosmetics and the merging of the two businesses. The leadership team has undertaken a strategic review prioritising the building of revenue and reduction of operating costs to improve profitability and cashflow. CEO Matthew Dudek announced immediate forecast annualised savings of more than $1 million. One change is the merging of Anagenics’ Advangen 3PL operations into 3PL’s warehouse. Anagenics sells anti-ageing and cosmeceutical and wellness brands. Imagion Biosystems progresses in-human trials
Cancer detection company Imagion Biosystems has progressed trials of its non-radioactive MagSense HER2 breast cancer test for HER2 positive breast cancer. The test, which detects if tumours have metastasized to the lymph nodes, replaces today’s practice requiring surgical biopsies of the lymph notes. Specialised MagSense nanoparticles are coated with tumour targeting antibodies and located by weak magnetic fields. Trials on the first five patients have revealed no safety issues related to the MagSense imaging agent with all tolerating the injected dosages. The LBT Innovations Limited  (ASX: LBT) share price is deep in the red today. This comes regardless of the medical technology company providing investors with a positive update yesterday. At the time of writing, LBT Innovations shares are down a sizeable 14.29% to 12 cents apiece. What did LBT Innovations announce? According to its announcement, LBT Innovations advised Clever Culture Systems (CCS) has signed an  exclusive distribution agreement  with Thermo Fisher Scientific. CCS is a joint-venture company owned equally by LBT Innovations and German medical equipment group Hettich. Thermo Fisher is a leading provider of instrumentation and consumables in the US microbiology market. The 5-year deal will see Thermo Fisher become the exclusive distributor for the company’s automated culture plate reader, APAS Independence, in the US. APAS Independence is the first and only FDA-cleared automated culture plate reader available in the United States. The innovative technology uses advanced imaging and artificial intelligence to interpret bacterial growth on culture plates. Under the agreement, Thermo Fisher will engage in sales and marketing activities for APAS Independence in the US. In addition, the company will also provide installation, maintenance and support services to customers. The agreement is a major milestone for LBT Innovations as it will provide sales and commercial activities in the US market which is the largest in the world. It offers more than 1,500 target laboratories for the potential placement of APAS Independence readers. LBT Innovations CEO and managing director Brent Barnes commented:
