The Aditya Birla Group, which owns the country's largest cement company Ultratech , has formally joined the race to buy out the Swiss cement giant Holcim's stake in Ambuja Cement and ACC, a person in the know of the development has said. The JSW Group, which is already present in the sector and the Adani Group which does not have a presence, are also reportedly in the race for the prized assets. Leading steel player ArcelorMittal has also shown interest and may join the race to acquire the two companies. The Birlas have formally put in a bid for Holcim's assets. The acquisition will be done through Ultratech, a source in the know of the development told PTI. The source insisted that this is not a binding bid. The source also said its proposal includes divesting 10-15 mt of Holcim capacity so that the deal does not get stuck with the fair trade body CCI. "We are pretty confident of getting the CCI approval as we are ready to divest some of the target companies' assets," the source said. When contacted, the Aditya Birla group firm's spokesman refused to comment saying they don't respond to market speculation. There are a few examples of the CCI clearing mergers and acquisitions when the acquirer's stake went beyond a limit, the source said and pointed out that when Vodafone and Idea merged, both operators had to exit a few circles. The world's largest cement maker Holcim last month announced its exit from the country after struggling here for a long. The company through two listed entities ACC and Ambuja has 66 million tonnes per annum capacity (MTPA). The group entered the market 17 years ago and the exit will put its listed arms, Ambuja and ACC, up for sale. Holcim holds a 63.19 per cent stake in Ambuja and a 4.48 per cent in ACC while Ambuja owns a 50.05 per cent stake in ACC. Holcim's exit is part of the group's 'strategy 2025' that aims for sustainable solutions for the building materials sector. The significance of cement in the overall group is already declining compared to ready mix concrete, aggregates, roofing, and green building solutions. The stake sale in Ambuja will trigger an open offer in both ACC and Ambuja. Since Holcim has a large shareholding in Ambuja and owns only a small fraction directly in ACC the buyer can only buy out Holcim's 63 per cent stake in Ambuja and then trigger an open offer for an additional 26 per cent in Ambuja. In case it is fully subscribed to, a new owner can end up owning 89 per cent of the company. This could be a USD 8.7-billion transaction at the current market price. Ultratech by far is the largest cement maker in the country with an installed capacity of 117 mt giving it around 25 per cent of the little over 500 MT domestic cement market, and if the deal goes through it will have to divest 10-15 MT of Holcim's capacity to meet the CII norms. Ultratech is cash-rich and can easily raise debt for the buyout. As of the December quarter, its debt to equity stood at a low of 0.32x. Ultratech is the world's third-largest cement maker outside China and the deal with Holcim will further cement this but is unlikely to make it the world's second-largest, the source said. In the past, it acquired assets of rivals such as Jaypee group cement assets, Binani Cement and the cement business of Century Textiles. Sources said Holcim is also in discussion with steel-to-energy conglomerate JSW Group and the Financial Times had on Tuesday, quoting its Chairman Sajjan Jindal had reported that it will make a USD 7 billion bid for Holcim's India subsidiaries. JSW would offer USD 4.5 billion in its own equity and USD 2.5 billion from undisclosed private equity partners for Holcim's Indian assets Ambuja Cement and ACC, the report had said. According to the industry insiders, Adani Group, which is getting into the cement segment, is also into the fray to acquire Holcim's India assets. The group led by the richest Indian, Gautam Adani, has been planning to enter the cement business. It is already setting up two cement units at Dahej in Gujarat and Raigarh in Maharashtra and aspires to be a leading one in the segment, sources said. Holcim is looking for a quick sale of India assets. Controlling the two companies will give a huge leg-up to the successful bidder, and Holcim's move has triggered a huge interest from potential suitors. The Birla Group will get a huge control of the industry if its bid were to go through. Therefore, it seems to have opted to pitch for a deal hoping it will make the cut with the Competition Commission. India is one of the most attractive cement markets globally as is seen by the presence of names such as Heidelberg Cement (formed through its acquisition of Italcementi in 2015) but with a capacity of 12.6 MT. In 2014, French Holcim and Swiss Lafarge merged their operations globally to form LafargeHolcim and this led to Lafarge India putting its 11 MT on the block (it entered India in the late 1990s) to be picked up by the Nirma Group. Lafarge grew in India through acquisitions and had also bought DLF's cement business in 1999 and then took over Ambuja.

New GE facility focuses on R&D of 3D printed wind turbine towers

The wind turbine manufacturing division of GE , GE Renewable Energy , has opened a new research and development facility dedicated to 3D printing the concrete base of wind turbine towers. The facility, located in Bergen, New York, will see GE conduct research into additively manufacturing the bottom portion of its wind turbine towers on-site at various wind farms as the firm looks to lower transportation costs and create additional employment opportunities. “Innovation will continue to be a key driver in accelerating the energy transition,” said Danielle Merfeld, GE Renewable Energy Chief Technology Officer. “It is particularly important to continuously improve the ways we design, manufacture, transport, and construct the large components of modern wind farms.”
GE’s new state-of-the-art concrete 3D printing system from COBOD. Improving wind turbine efficiency with AM
GE has been pioneering the adoption of 3D printing within the wind energy generation field for some time, applying the technology in order to improve wind turbine efficiency and performance. The firm believes 3D printing has the potential to “bring a step-change in cost and performance competitiveness” in the wind energy sector, as the industry continues to grow at record pace . In February last year, GE Renewable Energy was awarded a $6.7 million project by the US Department of Energy (DoE) to explore the design and manufacture of 3D printed wind turbine blades , working alongside Oak Ridge National Laboratory (ORNL) and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL). The 3D printed turbine blade tips are slated to have several benefits, including being lighter than conventionally manufactured counterparts as well as more recyclable and cost-effective. A few months later, Fraunhofer IGCV and binder jet system manufacturer voxeljet announced plans to build the “world’s largest” wind turbine 3D printer , the Advance Casting Cell (ACC), for GE’s offshore Haliade-X turbine. Once complete, the printer will enable the production of large turbine components near offshore wind projects, lowering transportation costs and bringing environmental benefits. Aside from turbine blades, GE has also dedicated significant research into how additive manufacturing can be leveraged for the fabrication of wind turbine towers. In June 2020, GE and construction firms COBOD and LafargeHolcim announced a partnership to co-develop 3D printed “record tall” wind turbine towers . The ability to print the base on-site with a concrete 3D printer could allow for the construction of towers up to 200 meters tall, double that of conventionally built towers due to the logistical issues around transporting them by road. With its new research and development facility, GE Renewable Energy will further explore how to 3D print the concrete base of wind turbine towers on-site at wind farms. The research is partially supported by a grant from the DoE and will see a team of 20 people work to optimize the 3D printing technology. The first applications of the technology within the field are anticipated within the next five years. “We appreciate the support of the US Department of energy for the research we are doing here and are confident it will help make the wind farms of tomorrow even more efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible,” said Merfeld. The new facility is equipped with a 3D printer supplied by COBOD which is the size of a three-story building and capable of printing tower sections up to 20 meters high. With the continual development of the technology, GE plans to be able to 3D print the bottom portion of wind turbine towers on-site at wind farms in order to lower transportation costs and create more employment opportunities at the wind farms the technology will be used. “We are extremely proud to have delivered a completely new type of 3D concrete printer – the largest of its kind in the world – for this world-class and state-of-the-art facility,” said Henrik Lund-Nielsen, Founder and General Manager of COBOD. “The printer we have delivered is second to none: not only can it print in excess of 10 tons of real concrete per hour, but in addition, it is the first 3D concrete printer in the world with two X-axes on the printer. “With the multiple functions of the printer, the printers can be better described as a multifunctional construction robot than a printer.”
Meanwhile, LafargeHolcim is supplying the specially-formulated concrete GE will use to 3D print the turbine towers. The firm predicts that the innovations achieved through its ongoing partnership with GE and COBOD will “help us all significantly” in our quest for net-zero. “Holcim has a key role to play in accelerating the transition towards clean, renewable energy,” added Edelio Bermejo, Head of Global R&D, Innovation and IP at Holcim. “We have been studying 3D printing in concrete for nearly a decade and the potential of this technology just keeps expanding. Projects that would have been impossible yesterday are now a reality. “We are particularly proud to be part of this ambitious project with GE and COBOD where we can propose the right mixture of ink to build more efficiency wind turbines, directly on-site.”

According to the American Clean Power Association (ACPA), there are more than 68,000 wind turbines generating clean, reliable power across the US. In fact, wind power is currently the fourth-largest source of electricity in the country with a capacity totaling 135 GW. “Reaching the Biden administration’s ambitious goals of carbon-free electricity by 2035 and a net-zero economy by 2050 will require vastly more wind energy capacity,” said Alejandro Moreno, the DoE’s Deputy Assistant Secretary for Renewable Power. “We’re proud to partner with GE Renewable Energy on this innovative 3D printing technology which has the potential to be a game-changer in how we harness this resource. “With American-made taller towers assembled on-site we can cut costs, overcome logistical hurdles, and accelerate progress toward our goals.”

Several smaller buildings reportedly will make way for a high-rise. Parts of a city block on the upper east side of Manhattan in New York reportedly has been targeted for demolition by a developer with new plans for the site. Both the New York Post and Patch.com have reported the intended project has been planned for a stretch of Second Avenue near E. 72nd Street. “A half-block chunk of the Upper East Side is set to be knocked down, and a high-rise building will likely be built in its place,” writes the Post in a March 29 online item. The media reports point to the New York-based Chetrit Group as the current owner of the land to be redeveloped. The Commercial Observer website describes Chetrit Group  as a “major player in real estate,” listing examples in both New York and Chicago. The structures at Second Ave. and E. 72nd facing demolition are described by the Post as including “a five-story building containing 28 apartments and a variety of commercial [that] have all closed since the end became imminent.”
Despite the pandemic and a soft commercial real estate market in New York that has followed, demolition and construction activity remains ongoing in Manhattan. Last December, another stretch of Second Avenue about a dozen blocks from the Chetrit project also was being proposed for demolition , according to Patch.com. Earlier this year, demolition activity on a project in Midtown Manhattan was temporarily halted after a fire broke out at the site. The Department of Community Development and Code Enforcement in Duncan, Oklahoma, is asking bonded and insured demolition contractors to pick up a bid packet tied to the demolition of “several structures.”
An online article from the Duncan Banner indicates multiple properties in that south central Oklahoma city have recently been declared as “common nuisances to the general public.”
The bid packets can be picked up by qualified contractors so they can be completed and returned for a sealed bid process by Tuesday, April 19. Capital Waste Services LLC (CWS), a portfolio company of Kinderhook Industries LLC, has announced the acquisition of Pee Dee Environmental Services Inc., Florence, South Carolina. Pee Dee owns a Class II construction and demolition waste landfill, which represents Capital Waste’s sixth add-on acquisition and Kinderhook’s 58th environmental / business services transaction since its 2003 inception. “We are excited to expand CWS’ capabilities in our core South Carolina market. With the addition of Pee Dee, we will expand the reach of our roll-off operations in the region, with a vertically integrated service offering,” CWS CEO Matt Parker says. “Former owner, Richard Bonnoitt, has built a great operation. We are eager to continue to invest in the landfill and provide the best service in the market.”
CWS has 75,000 residential customers across 12 long-term municipal contracts, as well as 10,000 commercial, industrial and construction and demolition waste customers. It’s based in Columbia, South Carolina and operates seven hauling locations, two transfer stations and two landfills in the region. “Pee Dee represents a well-positioned asset sitting in a desirable geography,” Kinderhook Managing Director Rob Michalik says. “As one of the few remaining independent disposal outlets in the market, we see a strong opportunity to drive outsized growth at the site.”

Peoria, Illinois-based dealership MH Equipment says it has received two awards from Cleveland-based material handling equipment maker Hyster-Yale Group (HYG).
